When you hire a moving company, ask if they're also the company that will deliver your household goods.
Sometimes a company you think is legitimate, will pick up your goods, then give it to some criminal moving company. Happens every day. Many time the company that show up to deliver your goods, won't have any marking on the truck. Take lots of photos of the truck and the drivers. If they object to that, and they will, call the police immediately and call the company you thought you hired.

 

I remember one incident, a man ordered a hand crafted couch from Germany. Very expensive, thousands of dollars.
The factory in Germany shipped it. It arrived in the USA and the company that was supposed to deliver it, brokered it out to a hotshot company. The hotshot driver, somehow loaded it and left. The couch never arrived at the destination. The hotshot driver was traced to his home in Georgia. He said there must be some mistake, I didn't haul the couch. The customer never received the couch. The hotshot driver was well known for stealing freight and swapping numbers and names on his truck. He wouldn't allow anyone inside his house to look for the couch. He was a lone wolf operator, not attached to any company.
