What is so dangerous and risky about driving a 24 foot truck from there to the west coast? If you use common sense when driving and take your time it would probably be a good experience, especially in the summer. Your baby will probably be just as comfy as in a car or pickup.

thats what I'm saying. When i was a baby my parents would drive from Massachusetts to florida (1400 miles) every year in nothing but a reg. cab pick up truck they said i loved it even when i was a baby. Even when we moved down here my dad drove that ol' chevy loaded down pullin a mini van that was loaded as well nothing happend.

Just take ur time, take plenty of rest brakes for u the family and the truck, and dont be afraid to stop in for the night. The only thing you will have to worry about is turning ur 6 month old daughter in to a wannabe trucker thats what happend to me... on second thought maybe u should fly...j/p

Cool. You might want to check out ABF's website.

The problem isn't so much the drive itself----what an experience!

It's just that some of the these truck rental companies have poor customer relations and poor maintenance (UHAUL!). Therefore it would be too risky that way.

Granted UHaul is not up there at the top of the heap as far as safety and customer service. In the past 25 years I have used them maybe five times without any problems though. BUT.......they are not the only game in town also, they just have the most well known name.

I don't know if they made the move yet but some of the advice is ok.
Yes don't try for speed records! Drive at the speed you fel comfortable with. Do the stop early thing to stay fresh and not want to kill hubby by the time you make it there!

Rest areas are just fine for stopping in just stay together and don't plan on sleeping in them!

Yes, keep the cell phones charged and look at the coverage maps! You would be surprised where out west there IS NOT coverage! And the route from NYC to OR is real bare from ND on west at least for my carrier, Sprint!

CB? I would not waste the money on 1 as truckers arent using them that much any more from the PA line west, unless you want to teach the kiddies a "new launage"!

A VERY GOOD padlock for the back door of the UHaul!

And the BEST advice given was ABF self move! Load the trailer up in the front yard and unload it in the front yard! UHaul can become a pain in the neck with breakdowns and problems! It will cost you about the same and after the aggrevation of UHaul, ABF is a godsend! Use a LOT of straps and padding inside the trailer. Remember you're moving through a very curvy area of the country,I 80 across PA and from north of Denver,CO gets real fun!

Just enjoy the drive out in the car and forget the truck!

2 cars? think trailer for one or car hauler like a private company but google the name of whoever you hire and do a BBB on them as I've seen some horror stories on a few of them!

But why move from NYC to Oregon?

He's not kidding. Look at the trucks they have, see how many are bashed in on the top? Most people aren't used to thinking about clearance.

Other than that, just take it easy and you'll be fine.
