On a similar note, I saw a 10Roads pulling a flatbed a few days ago.

I don't know. But I see 10Roads brokering round trips in my area. Mostly cheap and half the rate it should be. How are they allowed to do that under postal contract?

    No, I haven't hauled any.

This should come as no surprise, I'm confident we'll see the end of that losing entity in our lifetimes. There was a local mail hauler that now has "10 Roads" on the door. A company in Waterloo, Wis. that was mail exclusively, ditched all the mail accounts and became a freight hauler 10 years ago. This wonderful machine I'm using right now, has caused the loss of more jobs than it will ever create. The paper industry in Wis. decimated by the computer, and that's not all bad, we're saving a lot of trees, but mail has been iffy for years, and I say, good riddance.

In a way, I agree. Most of my mail, I reckon more than 90%, goes straight to the garbage bin, without me even looking at it.
Still, 480 drivers, mostly seasoned drivers, will be looking for jobs, in times that are not so favorable to find something decent.

Hey, I worked as a Christmas rush driver for these guys for 6 weeks about 25 years ago. What a cr@p company, too! I drove an old Mack daycab with 4,000,000 miles on it. Only had a 5-speed, and a drop axle on tractor. Almost every time I started it, I had to hit the starter with a broom handle. My "route" was from the Rochester Auxiliary location on Mushroom Blvd. to the Syracuse-Hancock field mail facility; 8 runs a week, all were night runs.

About 85% of the loads were completely empty except for 1 bag of "urgent" mail, in a 53' trailer. Return loads were slightly larger, but I never left with anything more than a 1/4 full trailer. When I started, they told me the trucks all had EZ-Pass. But, my EZ-pass did not work (and I wasn't going to front them the toll cash for a 6-week temp job..), so I just ran the red lights. Oh, they sent me to get a current Medical Examiner's certificate, which they charged me $90 for when I left (or give it back..). I kept it.

The postal service is such a disaster anymore. The company I used to be leased to would get some mail loads on occasion. This was an “expedite” load that I had going to Urbandale IA. Full truck rate for 3 boxes of Priority Mail envelopes and boxes.
