It seams that every time I do lp it becomes a headache. Destroyed trailer during load or not informing me that they are done loading. Hours go by...

Well I made it home today Saturday... Yesterday I went to Chicago to a metals company in the worst possible spot after taking 7 hours at the shipper in grand rapids to get loaded.....
I followed the receivers directions BAD IDEA and wound up backing 2 blocks in terrible traffic because the bridge that says 13 10" is actually much lower because the road dips down sharply my truck with 73000 lbs would not make it under thank goodness I looked. Then I couldn't make the right turn on the road to the plant because the turn is literally not possible so I had to go beck on the freeway and come from a different direction to the plant. That worked well however getting in the gates was one big debacle because its a sharp turn uphill onto the scale and the gates don't open all the way. I have never been so aggravated before. 2nd gear all the way speed limit 3mph in the yard....
After weighing in you go around to the docks which are actually not too bad to get in however if there are any vehicles from an suv to a semi you can forget getting into them and guess what 2 trucks waiting and an express van. By this point I am loosing it.
Here is where the fire department gets called HOLD ON FOLKS!
I get unloaded go to the gates out and discover I have a very sharp left turn out onto the street and then another sharp left back around the building and that I once again have to slide the tandems ( IN THE STREET ) I do that and get on the scale which by the way is too small for our trucks so the tandems need to be forward for that as well. While I am re weighing the fire department comes rushing in and blocks the entrance and forward way out. Then the captain comes over and says back outta here! To which I say HOW? You have everything blocked then he says hang on and walks off he didn't come back! The whole time I have dispatch on the phone and the security guard asking me to move back too... My dispatcher is great but I in essence hung up on him because I got three conversations going and am confused. It turns out to be a small flash fire that was put out by the employees fast and nobody hurt thankfully.
Needless to say I think this goes down as the craziest moment I have had driving both recent and when I was 48 OTR...
My hair started falling out
Anyways not anybody fault at work and they did right by me and cancelled the next load said your obviously out of time and irritated so go ahead and stay there for the night if they let you. The guard was nice and said park out back in our back lot. This morning I get up too rap rap rap... ? Its the police saying the guard called them. Shift change and nobody passed on why I am there. I had to take over a small parking lot just to park for the night owned by this company and blocked off I didn't just sneak into a Chicago side street and park!
They ended up agreeing with me and saying have a good night. Ya right now I can't sleep and ended up cleaning my windshield in the dark. By golly 2:25am the police show up again and say your 10 is up please leave the premises. So I dead headed home....
What a day.......
Im sure for all you guys used to local Chicago this is probably easy.....
Looking back its actually entertaining but man I don't wanna do that again.... I used to go to Chicago a lot with my old companies and hit some tight spots and have been here a lot with Kuperus but this takes the cake. It was nice leaving in the early morning very little traffic.Last edited: Jul 16, 2016

Ya need to remember, take a chill pill sometimes. Loosing it helps no one, and hurts you.
I used to run Chicago on a daily basis. You just get used to the fact that things are going to be tight, hectic, and unnerving. Just go with the flow. Traffic backup? Nothing you can do about that. Find a good radio station, and watch the people in cars next to you. Tight quarters? Take your time, and remember, hundreds have done this before you, and hundreds will continue to do it.trucking for family Thanks this. -

We used to have a delivery on Lake Street, probably 3 blocks west of Cicero. Middle of the 'hood, Lake Street has the L train running over it, so you had rail and bridge supports to deal with, along with traffic, and you had to back through an open gate.
I used to wait along the curb with the 4 ways on, until there was a break in the traffic. Had to block 4 lanes of traffic.Once I started to move, I ignored the cars that were waiting, and concentrated on backing in. Sometimes I could get it in the first shot, other times it might take 10 minutes or more. And you had to watch out for the impatient ones, who would cut behind you, or in front of you. Not much fun, but a necessary evil.Short Fuse EOD and trucking for family Thank this. -
Totally hear ya on the scrap runs. The scales are at the gates and many times there is little room to make a right or left turn on the scales. I never had to spend the night in Chicago. Always was able to push out a little bit. Chicago is a bad place when you are close to the end of your 11/14. I do like delivering water to that warehouse near Joliet. They off load fast! The deadheads from Chicago or Detroit back to GR suck. Hurts the paycheck. Unfortunately, Friday evenings there is little freight coming back. If you get stuck in a situation like that and still have time on your 70 talk to dispatch. You may be able to score a menards run. That's what I like about Kuperus, if you talk to dispatch sometimes they can work something out if you are willing to pull. Sometimes I wish we could stay out over the weekend and take a reset within the freight lane and keep on hauling vs. a deadhead.

One can make a very good paycheck from time to time, too. I once got a high-value load of something from a broker that netted me about $1,000 for the one load. It doesn't happen often but when it does, it's nice to see a monster paycheck.Last edited: Jul 16, 2016
