My load weight

It depends on the trailer you are pulling.

I crossed the NV border into CA with my tandems set on the 6th hole thinking I was legal then I got pulled in at just after midnight when "all them DOT dudes were sleeping" and I got inspected crossing the border off I-15 trying to get down into the LA valley.

They gave me a pass on my tandems with just a verbal warning but nailed me for some chaffed airlines thing.

Just buy a tape measurer and measure the length to make certain you are OK. Those CA DOT dudes don't sleep. Don't risk it. That's coming from experience. If your tandems are set correctly you have a good chance of just driving through and ever getting pulled in for extra attention. But if that does happen they will give you a complimentary face mask. So I don't know maybe it's worth?

The trailer I was pulling was weighed barely legal at the 6th hole, but the DOT cop told me that trailer should be at the 4th hole. He said maybe roll it back "about 2 holes." But it depends on the trailer you have. Just measure it.

 

Just measure it to make sure. Then you will know from now on.

 

If crossing on I-80 the Truckee scales don’t sleep. Ever. I mean ever.

 

Also, their sense of humor is removed when they go to work there.

 

I worked for mike lowrie trucking for awhile. Around 21:00 one night I rolled through there with a load of hay on. Was summer time and I stopped in Reno to get the book looking right. They give me a full level 1 and everything goes smooth. I walk into the main area to get my paperwork and the scale master throws my paperwork on the desk, glares at me, and turns and walks away without even saying a word. I smile and say have a good evening. I loved it. When they red lighted me, I barely got my steers onto the scale before he told me to pull around back.

 

LOL...he was disappointed. He figured one of Mike's truck had to have some kind of violation.
Spoil sport.

On another note about Truckee. I went through there with an empty fuel tanker and they pulled me in. They were training a new guy.
They found a fitting leaking one drop every four minutes. The drip was falling into a rock guard that was full of dirt and nothing was even hitting the ground. Yup, they timed it. And they wrote me up for a haz mat violation. They took pictures, drew diagrams, the whole nine yards. I took up the packing nut about a quarter turn and the leak stopped but they held me an additional hour to make sure.
We went to court on it. The judge looked at the pictures, the diagrams, and listened to our side of the story. His actual words were "This is ridiculous", gave the citing officer a little lecture about wasting the court's time and threw the case out of court.
From then on, for about a year, we got stopped and very carefully inspected every single time we went through Truckee .
Like I said, no sense of humor.

 

I am not surprised at all. I honestly can say I hate that scale. I resorted to taking 88 and going around.
