This is the way my instructor told me to tell the dmv word for word

"My wheels are chocked, this is my air brake test
First, I'm going to push in my tractor protection valves, and let the air stabilize, I should not lose more than 3 PSI in one minute
Next, I'm going to step on the brake, I should not lose more than 4 PSI in one minute
Next, I'm going to turn the key on, my light and or buzzer should come on between 60-70 PSI
Next I'm going to turn the key off, and fan my brake, my tractor protection valves should pop out between 20-40 PSI
Next, I'm going to start the engine, my air tanks should fill up to normal operating range of 105-115 in 3-3.5 minutes"

Then you look the tester in the eye and say "this concludes my air brake test"

The most important part is to look deeply into the tester eyes. With a passion

when checking to see if buzzer and light comes on, you will have to say you are fanning the brakes to see if they work.

This reads like a bad script written by somebody who's never actually done an air brakes test.

Testing the air brakes is super simple, but you've got to get the order of events right or you will fail.

    1) Run the engine until the air system is completely charged.

    2) Turn the engine off then turn the key back to the ON position. The guages, lights and alarms don't work with the key OFF.

    3) Step on the brake pedal, then push in the red and yellow air valves. Wait for the air to stabilize.

    4) Note the air level on the guages. Keep steady pressure on the brake pedal and begin timing. If you lose less than 4 psi in 1 minute, the air system passes inspection. If you lose more than 4 psl in 1 minute, the air system fails inspection.

    5) If the air system passes, check the low air warning by fanning the brake pedal until the warning light comes on and the alarm sounds. Note the air pressure on the guages.

    6) if the low air warning passes inspection, check the tractor protection valve by continuing to fan the brake pedal until the red valve pops out. Note the pressure on the guages.

    7) If the tractor protection valve passes inspection, check fhe compressor shut off by starting the engine and listening for the bleed-off valve to go "whoosh". Note the pressure on the guages.

Describe steps 4 - 7 to the tester as you do them.

If any step fails. Stop the inspection and tell the tester that the vehicle has failed inspection. If you move to the next step after the previous step fails. You will fail the test.

My tester was an attractive mature woman. I didn't dare, cause you know my wife would find out.

Braking while the air values are out isn't a good thing. Just slightly touch it till you push the valves in then compress or push the valves first then in

Nobody said you have to mash on the brake pedal to do a brake test.

As to whether it's a good idea to apply the service brake while the parking brake is engaged... being out of control of the vehicle is grounds for auto fail while being tested.

Just do it like your instructor told you to. They've been through it and through it and know what your tester expects to hear. It's too bad that it has to be this rehearsed little skit that you do for a DMV employee, but it gets you the license and the ability to go on in the profession.
