Hard to put this out there without full disclosure, as many times as I've tried to chop it up in my head. So here it is.

I sold this unit to a friend in 2019, I have all the maintenance records on it up to sale. My friend has all maintenance records on it till this date.

I bought it at 963,000 miles, ran it to 1.4 million miles, sold it to him, he in framed it 83k miles ago, and just put a PTLO 16913 remanned transmission on it, over 1 year warranty remaining.

This is my first truck, and his flagship truck, that got put on its side with a trailer full of bottled water, last month. The driver is OK, my friend is distressed, not financially, but emotionally - the slow growth business model was going very well until now. Just had his first baby with his wonderful wife late last year.

Old Red is trashed - was put on her side and shut down.

Rebuild unfortunately had to be PAI kit, OEM was months out at the time. I know what I put into it, and he and I have records up till now. My friend can buy the unit salvage, and have the engine and transmission removed at his cost. I suggested pulling tires and rims (22.5LP) for other trucks.

He is not mechanically inclined, but his shop can pull and strip and send cab/chassis to scrap. My suggestion was that somebody would pay $15-$20k for that engine/ trans, with paperwork.

Would obviously need injectors pulled, turned over, before firing up , to clear oil. Has new turbo and one piece manifold. Great unit for somebody wanting to repower an older truck, vs. core or Van Der Haags "no known history " replacement.

Unit is in the Charlotte, NC area.

Question - I guess, is he better to leave it to go to scrap, or buy back, have the power pulled out, so someone else can have a verifiable good unit for a repower?

Really depends on how much the buy back is. Our friend Adam has started buying trucks like this and then parts them out. But he’s a decent wrench. Engine, trans and rears might bring 20. Big might. But it will take a while to move it and he will have to sit on it in the meantime.

Looking at the local market it’s doubtful. A quick search shows 7500-9500 for a motor. Trans 1500 -3000 for a trans.
Complete running driving trucks for 10-15k.

If he’s not mechanically inclined, it have to be pretty ####### cheap as a buyback and you kind of wanna have somebody lined up that already wanted what you’re taking out of it. If somebody was going to charge him even the remainder of 10 grand to chop it all up including the buy back- I don’t bet he’d break even

Market is so bad right now, that people who usually would do those kind of projects don't have any money or desire to do that.
I personally would not buy an engine from a truck that laid on it's side and I also wouldn't get anything rebuilt with anything other than OEM parts.
Just take insurance money and forget about it

Depending on how long it laid on its side, there may not even be any oil on top the pistons, but…. pulling the injectors is a cautionary measure to insure hydrostatic lock doesn’t occur and bend a connecting rod.

Cummins is no longer planning on supporting the Big Cam which is what I’m running, what parts are on the shelf across the world will be the last of the OEM for them here in the near future.

I have used PAI as well as Interstate McBee parts, but I still use OEM head gaskets, fortunately the 855 & N14 use the same head gaskets….

Probably a bad idea. Started to explain why but I will stop there.

Find out what the buyback on that truck would be. And that will tell the whole story. My bet would be it's not gonna be great. Three years ago when trucks were high, I still think you would've only broke even.

No one has commented on the transmission, this is the first time I hear of a PTLO, now an RTLO is common in the industry but “P”TLO ? What am I missing ?

    Transmission is RTLO16913A

Salvage value currently sitting at $1,300. Insurance keeps the truck for $8,300 minus $1,000 deductible. I can keep the truck for $7,000 minus $1,000 deductible.
