I know this has been gone threw a few times but just checking to see in case any new info has come up, 2001 N14 Celect Plus, 500/1650, 1.4 on the block, 400,000 ON an inframe, starts fine, idles fine cold, 80% of the time pulls like a champ on the highway @ 140,000lbs, but the other 20% of the time it will start to miss after a shift when in high range, i'll shift, get on it, she'll miss and shake, let off, get back on, still missing, let off, get back on and away she goes, also happens while downshifting while climbing a hill, but same thing i let off get back on it and it goes away. Second part of the problem is hot idle after i stop at a truck stop or wherever, it will be idling smooth but then out of nowhere it will miss, smooth out, miss, smooth out, but when it misses it almost sounds like a different cylinder each time, almost like its doing its own cutout test lol. Took it to cummins, no injector codes, 1 inactive VSS code, but #4failed hot idle cutout test, so we swapped it out, but of course when back on the road it didn't make any difference. They are thinking maybe the ECM is failing, especially since they couldn't get communication at the diagnostic plug at the ecm, had to go the one under the dash. Only other things changed is the filter and the fuel tank splitters, thinking about getting a roll of fuel line and changing every line next weekend when im home, looking for everything i can try before dropping thousands into ecm's, wiring, and injectors.

Best thing would be hook up laptop and go for a ride to see what's happening. You can try unbolting injector harness at the back of head and inspect wires. Also leave it loose for a trip, see if any change. Have you checked ECM hot and grounds? When is the last time the screen on top of pump was cleaned?

Any chance someone would let you barrow an ECM to test? There is a guy on you tube N14 Cummings that has a lot of info on electrical problems with these engines. He or someone else has info on fuel restrictions. I bought an ECM from him for $1400? It's been awhile.

Mine did the same thing, it was a bad power connection for the ecm at the battery box. Replaced the but connector, fuse holder, and a couple worn battery jumpers, and the problem was solved.
When your engine gets hot at idle does the fan cool it down? The n14 I had did the same thing intermittently, I either ran the defroster, or put the fan on manual.
The defroster uses the AC, which turns on the fan as needed.

no usually when i park it cools down fairly fast without the fan, in this weather anyway, summertime I usually kick the fan on when i park

was you n14 in a pete? just trying to find the ecm fuses, found the one on the ground wire, are the others wired straight from the battery or do they feed from the fuse panel in the cab?

Fuses should be inline, inside battery box.

I also think having someone ride with you for a test drive with Insite connected will be the best way to find which cylinder is missing. You can manually cut out injectors while driving. If you can get it to act up, it will be easy to find which one is the culprit as the miss will not change when that injector is cut out.
