I’ve got the new oil pump primed on this new in frame. Batteries though not new have been on charge overnight, with the ECM unplugged and both 10 amp fuses out. I cranked it for about 20 seconds at a time and oil pressure slowly went up to 10psi. Should it be higher when cranking? Should I go ahead at put fuses back in and plug up ECM and try it?

It is a high volume, low pressure engine.

    Oxbow Thanks this.

Have to remember that cranking speed is significantly lower than idle speed - I'd estimate at a bit more than 1/3. That means the oil pump is going to move significantly more oil once its idling.

I'd start it up, its building oil pressure while cranking. Just watch your gauge and react accordingly if pressure is not building.

    Just what @AModelCat said -

I’d fire it up and monitor oil pressure and shut it down if it doesn’t rise above 10psi.

From memory you’ll be at 25-30 psi with hot oil, 35 plus with cold oil at idle.

Have someone stand by and check for leaks too.

When I start the oil pressure sensor goes almost all the way up and then drops down to 20. After engine warms up it drops to 15. It would show 10 only when completely warmed up.
Do u have an aftermarket or original oil sensor? Aftermarket show 5 psi less from my experience

Original. Well, same one that’s been in it.

    ScanGauge Diesel

I use one for my 1995, it at least reads the information to the ECM, bypassing the often incorrect older manual guages.

Fire it up. I've seen plenty of hot N14's idling at 9 psi. I can't recall for certain what Cummins spec was on a hot engine, but IIRC, 8 psi.

I’ve got the batteries continuing to charge and the Mrs. had made plans for me. I don’t have a radiator yet, so no charge air cooler hanging yet either. I’ll be back at it tomorrow. Oh, my other post about the oil supply tube not sealing at the pan,……. well I think I got that fixed. Loosened, the two on the bottom of pump and slightly loosened the two at the pan. A little persuasion with a rubber mallet and she’s, flush.
