I’m working part time with a company that has a box truck, no dot numbers or anything. Under 26kGVW, they need to deliver a piece of equipment across state lines and want me to drive. There’s a weight station on route always open.
what issues am I looking at? They also want to rent a penski truck just to be cautious, but even then I’m thinking no.

I read somewhere, if the truck has a DOT #, you must stop at a scale. If your box truck doesn't have one, I don't think you need to stop. I know all Penske and Uhaul trucks have DOT#s. I suppose you could go around the scale, straight trucks aren't under the scrutiny a TT is, but always risky business. If you get a Penske truck, and not grossly overloaded, I'd just run over the scale.
Does a box truck have to stop at a weight station? - QuoraLast edited: Sep 10, 2024

Second, you better have a medical, I was told here you are driving a commercial vehicle for hire, it is now required.
It depends on the state, some states don't require you to scale while some do.
If your cheap company has to try to skirt the laws by trying to rent a truck, then they are setting you up. As REO said, they know the tricks.
I want you to know that overall, don't sweat it.LoneRanger and Lonesome Thank this. -
Are you talking freight-for-pay ? Is item to be delivered your co. or from a paying customer ?

Different states have different rules for 6-wheelers at their weigh stations. Read the state page in the Rand-McNally Motor Carrier Road Atlas and read the sign at the weigh station. You cannot get into legal trouble taking a legal truck & driver into a weigh station if it is not necessary. So if in doubt, enter the weigh station. If you are running illegal, stop doing that.
LoneRanger Thanks this. -
I decided I’m not driving, another guy with a CDL is going to drive.
Thanks everyone for clearing up my understanding. -
If they chase you, and come up to talk, do the ‘No speaka de english.’
