    Good Afternoon,

I need help and advice regarding, Returning To Work after a 4 Year Break From Driving. The reason for the 4 year break was due to tragically losing 2 daughters in a short time frame. Subsequently, I went into a dark period of grief for about 3 years and had no business driving since I hauled Hazardous Chemicals and Explosives.

Most of my Driving Experience is hauling bulk tankers of hazardous chemicals & explosives from the Houston, TX area to points mainly between Toronto and Montreal. I would normally reload in Morrisburg,ON and return to the Houston TX area. In July of 2019, Shortly after the death of my daughters, I shut down my truck and haven't worked since.

Currently, I'm 62 yrs old, feel good, overall I'm in good health, have 35+ yrs of Safe Driving, No Accidents, No Tickets. Have pulled most every kind of trailer and freight except liquid gases and over size loads.
I've been reminded many times that the door is open to return to the same company I last worked for and doing the same type work as I previously did but, I just think I would like a fresh start. I have a home in Northeast Florida and a small home in the South Louisiana area. My CDL is a Florida CDL. I have Hazmat, Doubles-Triples and Tank Endorsements. Also have a TWIC and Passport.

So, my question is: With a 4 Year Break In Driving History, At My Age and, With My Experience, which companies would I have the best shot at, being offered a "Good Company Driving Job" with "NO Recent Experience"?? If the job is Regional or OTR, preferably a pay structure that's worth being on the road.

***FWIW: I'm Fully Aware and understand what I'm up against with the Break In Driving History and No Recent Driving History. I understand I can't apply to Every Company like I previously could and receive a quick job offer but, I know TTR has a lot of Smart Senior & Retired Drivers that usually offer great advice when others need help dealing with various issues and, that's what I'm interested in hearing.

Lastly, thanks in advance to those who can offer any help or advice with this issue.

Truckermania and Bud A. Thank this.

Given your circumstances -- personally, I think you were/are smart to take a break from driving -- this move on your part is simply further evidence that you are indeed a good driver -- & any sensible fleet would be lucky to have you aboard.

I think some companies (too anal to be worthwhile, anyway ) will be hesitant to bring you on board -- while still others will see the "diamond in the rough"....and gladly talk at length with you.

As I write this -- Trimac is looking for an OTR company driver out of their Pensacola terminal. Pickup & drop-off points for this position are all in the southeast.

I think it's likely that you'd be a good candidate there.

Especially if you can show/produce a valid, current medical ID card -- & the related long form.

Finding a job should be east. Some companies true enough, may be hesitant. Had a guy in my orientation class that was hired on after a 4 year absence. Other companies might have ya do a refresher. I'd imagine it'd be easier to find work using the Louisiana address as opposed to the Florida one though.

Only problems with the Louisiana address is he'd have to pay state income taxes.
