Hey all, first off, this is a great place, I am really glad I found it..
second, a little back story, I have been interested in driving OTR for a while now been doing a little research on it, it fits my nature, I am a loner by nature, have no wife/kids etc so it would work for me, plus I like hearing the stories of the money you can make with it, I would finally be able to afford to live the way I would like...
First I look into one company, to be honest I dont remember the name, they were based in Milton, Florida but the cost of the school was quite a bit, they wanted 5k for the class total for 3 weeks training, said if I could come up with 1k first, they would finance the rest.. I said I would think it over and look at other options, well one recently presented itself which is what brought me here... a friend of a friend recently went through Prime Inc (yes yes, I can feel you all cringing right now) and of course when I went to the page and did the intial research, they looked all well and good.. then of course I had to do a horror story search, which brought me to this place lol....
So I guess in a long winded roundabout way.. I am asking what is the best way to get into this, it is almost feeling like it would be better to say go to my local college and take the class there, then try and get a company to pick me up, or is paying the 1000 down and getting a school to place me when I am trained better? I really hate being a sometimes lol
need some advice...

hey, and welcome aboard. was it CDI/TDI in Milton? if it was i JUST WENT THERE TODAY for an interview . i am definately going there as i live right down the road in Crestview. if it wasn't, check them out. they will find a loan if you can't pay cash. it sounded good to me, but i'm a newbie also LOL.

I think it might have been, I know the advertise in my local paper as Werner Ent. but when you get there, the building just says "Truck Driving School" on it lol, but that may have been the company I was looking at, I know they said they would try and get you a loan if you couldnt come up with money for it, but having 1000 down would make it a lot easier. they also claimed that the get the company they put you in when you graduate to pay off the loan for you.

It sounds llike 5K for three weeks training is a bit high . I know one has to make some money while going to school but man 5k. Thats only 120 hrs of training if you go 5 days a week and 8 hrs a day .I'm going to a tech school here in my state it is 22 week with early exit. 7:30 to 3:30 M-F. For less than 4k (3600)with more time driving than class room work . Then you get to pick the company you want to work for rather than them choosing you or having to stay with them just to pay your training off. Alot of companies will do tuition remburstment for going with them . In my mind this would be a better deal even if you didnt like the company after X amount of time you could leave . Just a thought :smt048

it is from 7-5:30 monday - friday with a 3 hour night class at the end. classes start every monday and there are (i was told) only up to 12 or so allowed per class, so student to instructor ratio is supposed to be good

Have you thought about schooling with Schneider? Yes, you'll have to drive for them for a while (a year), but I heard only positive about schooling there and nothing bad about driving for them in all places I checked. They seem to come up from what they used to be let say 10-15 years ago. I do not really care if somebody will call me "Pumpkin" because of the trucks color J. After all I made my mind to start this way, as you may understand I'm not a driver yet. Also after I read here about community colleges having such classes I'll look at this option as well. I'll try to avoid paying so much (~$5k) for schooling. Good luck!

I will look into them if they have a good reputation, any idea of the startup costs to become a driver trainer there? I am sure I can get that info from a recruiter, but I like hearing it from the people first since recruiters will tell you anything you want to hear lol
