Booked my first load from TQL.... asked for $500 over posted rate. I got $100 extra and I asked for fuel surcharge of 19%... they said no and only offerd a fuel advance.... I feel like I am missing something or at least leaving money on the table. Whats the best way to negotiate rates?

Step 1 of negotiation is to find a broker that will actually negotiate. Tql ain't it.

Na, they gave me 30 bucks extra this week! It only took an hour of arguing with the booking agents boss.......or was it his Mom?

    Easy.
Say a load posted for $1500.
Tell them you’ll do it for say $2300.
They will come back with $17-1800.
You can drop yours or say I told you what it’ll take to get me moving.

They may go to the $500, doing $2000 for the load which is what you wanted to begin with.

Ok. I did that and managed an extra 100... wasn't wanting to lose the load, I had just picked up my own trailer and really wanted to get rolling... but what about fuel surcharge? How do I get that?

My authority is under 30 days old... they was only broker that would give me a load.... I have an LLC for 4 years and 15 yrs driving.... in a few days I will be able to access other loadboards and brokers. I really don't want to miss out on FSC tho... fuel surcharge

Good luck. I don't bother negotiating with them, if they aint already offering enough to get me to do it they won't likely go high enough to get me to load it anyway.

I was actually pleased with posted rate. I got 4500 for a 22k load going 1830 miles... I think I did ok for first load.... but I know I was to do as best I can every time. So I ask for advice. Cuz I don't know it all...yet

The best tactics in negotiation on the spot market is to be at the right place at the right time.
After awhile if you run certain regions, you will learn those places and timing.
The first year you will get lowballed like crazy, just do the best you can.
