Its fun the first couple times when its a learning experience, getting to see how it all works inside. After that its like whatever, I'll just swap it out and save myself a day.

Probably will just get a reman here ASAP looks like they are 3-4k. I don't really have the time for a learning experience. If my local shop has the time and a decent quote I will probably let them do the work. They can probably have it done in a day. I'm not sure I could. Plus just spent all week pulling and setting axles lol and I'm tired of wrenching. I just want to be back on the road. I have had some ridiculously high paying work that I have had to cancel.Rideandrepair and Big Road Skateboard Thank this.

Shop can have a rebuilt here this afternoon. 6k. 2 year warranty. 1k for clutch. 3k for labor. I could go pick one up a few hours away but it is 4.5k with 3k core charge. I think I will probably just bite the bullet and get them started.

Trans really doesn’t make sense to me, if anything it should be worse in 8 low when every gear is spinning, but I’ve been wrong before

Only thing that has me convinced is that when I disengage the trans it stops immediately. Everything else in the driveline is new and set correctly. Also happens only on 8 high and low, pretty bad. Getting worse. Only thing that I was wondering is the oil really didn't look to terrible, I have seen worse out of good running trans. I know everyone is suspect of the new diffs but they only have like 150k on them. It was a farm truck that just sat and did nothing for almost 30 years. They look basically like they did from the factory. Everything was nice and tight and spun freely and smoothly. Guess we will see when I get the truck to the shop. They can look at it. I'm tired of working on it for this week.Big Road Skateboard Thanks this.

It could just be the clutch or the friction surface of the flywheel or pressure plate. They build up the most heat in od gears. And in top gear they are taking a pretty good work out to keep things moving at lower engine speeds. If the trans shows no signs of being the culprit than the clutch would be the major suspect. Gotta be major bearing or shaft wear to cause a vibration. Even a missing tooth or two may not show any symptoms. The older 13’s were noisy in top gear by design. They would scream the loudest at 60-65 mph no matter what rear ratio you had.

I do think the clutch and flywheel are junk.
But trans has to come out anyways for that.
I asked them to pull the inspection cover and take a look and send me photos. But also if they see nothing I don't want to put it back in and have the same horrible noise/shake. The shop owner is a pretty honest and straightforward guy. I took him for a ride in it and he immediately thought it was something with the trans.SmallPackage Thanks this. -
Also i have had other 13 speeds of the same vintage this isn't the typical highway cruising speed noise. It is nasty. Something is definitely broken or loose somewhere. And to be honest with how horrible the front differential was and me driving 10ish miles total while knowing something was very wrong.... probably damaged something. Also in the handful of miles I drove today 10-20 it has gotten worse. Still only 8 high and low. Absolutely horrible in 8 high. If you didn't know much about trucks you would #### near think the engine brake is on when you let off the throttle. The rumble and drag is really something.

Since it’s in the same gear high and low side I say it’s in the transmission. Possibly some wear in the washer that the high gear sets on. My Dad referred to it as a burn out. Could be a chipped tooth on main shaft gear or counter shaft.
If it was high side only I would 100 percent say look in the diffs first. I would also tell you to look at all the breather hose clamps but that’s a story from a long time ago and for another daySmallPackage, AModelCat and KFF Thank this. -
I wish it wasn't the trans but I believe it is. Guy at the shop immediately thought it was as well. I wonder if the differential damaged the trans or the trans damaged the differential. Both were supposed to be low miles. Just from external inspection and fluids they seemed fine about 3k miles ago and did appear refurbished. I had to replace the ujoints and carrier bearing and I wonder if the trans has been shaking everything for awhile. All stuff hard to know on a used truck.wore out Thanks this.
