I was a Tire man... Pilot escort back when I was young for a few years... I've been in retail management for about 20 years and just tired of dealing with retail customers and thinking about getting back on the road as a pilot... Already getting the required equipment together and setting up for the certification class... Will be setting up with either a late model SUV or Van...Any thoughts or advice getting going...Thanks

Here's some good reading in the meantime.
Why won't drivers listen to the escort....

Asw I have briefly mentioned I have done this before and just getting started again... I understand piloting and my goal will be to professionally work with drivers to get the load to the destination safely. I'm not a kid in an old cop car trying to make a buck but a seasoned experienced man looking to get back on the road ... I'll work with any driver to see what he or she needs and do my job as a professional...

    Don't leave your wing man.
Bad enough to get by the following pilot straddling both lanes, then the wide load only to find the lead guy holding up traffic a mile ahead of the show.

I see it as a field I could make a ton of money in, if only I could replicate myself.

    • Purchase a reliable capable vehicle
    • Proffessional signwriting is cheap
    • Get a quality radio
    • Learn /study ALL the state requirements for your profession.
    • Carry 2-way, flags, banners, overhead, cones, light sticks . . . everything you will possibly need.
    • Modify tank capacity if needed
    • Certify/qualify/register . . . . .
This will put you in the top 5%. And you'll get repeat business.

I can count on one hand out of doxens of escorts I've used , that I would use again. Your call is the difference between life and death, and my career.

    Good luck.

I had a commercial license back then but when I was offered to change to CDL I wasn't driving anymore and didn't do it. Thanks for the advice I'll probably do that too :)

Show up on time with your #### ready to go! If I tell you we leave at 7 show up at 6:45. Don’t need you to call everything and if I say I need lane 1, I mean I need it now.

    Paul NeFl Thanks this.
