need some advice, please (and use small words if possible)

Just got a new samsung droid, to replace my 3 year old samsung droid (total investment in both $1.01......yea me)

    so........

    1. how can I transfer all my pics to either my new phone or laptop. is there some kind of tether or something I can buy for this?
    2. Ditto phone numbers

laptop is sorta the same thing, but with a different issue(s).......

    1. I'm going to give my phone away. Is there any way (or do I need to) erase everything on it? is there like a thing I have on my computer that will take it back to the day (roughly) that I bought it?
    2. same with laptop.......was going to download my files / pics to a thumb drive, then do a "system restore" to when I first got it to erase everything else. Is this a good idea? (I don't care about the software going away).

    thanks in advance

The Contacts should be backing up on your Google Account.
    Who's your Carrier.
Verizon has a 'Cloud' App that will backup your contacts and pics and stuff on their server, makes it easy to put on your new phone.
I would guess the other Carriers have something similar not really sure.

Like Balakov said, since you're on Android transferring your contacts should be easy and all backed up to your Google account. When you sign in your Google account on the new phone it should download contacts (and depending on settings, your apps, etc.) on to the new phone. You should have an options in settings that will let you perform a "factory reset" (usually located under "Backup and Reset" or "Privacy" section in the settings area) that will set the phone back to like the day you got it.

With the laptop, it should have come with some CDs/DVDs (although you see this less and less in newer models) that will let you reinstall Windows and all the drivers to get the laptop back to "day 1" as well. Using the system restore function within windows keeps files and stuff I believe, you'd probably be best off doing a complete fresh install.

Keep in mind that data can still be accessed on both the phone and the laptop hard drive even after you have reset/reinstalled. Someone really has to know what they are doing, but it is absolutely possible. Personally, I would take the hard drive out of the laptop, keep that in a safe place (great in case you remember 2 months down the road that you need some tax documents off of there) and then let the next person put their own drive in it. Same goes for the phone, just because you reset it doesn't mean that everything is totally gone out of the flash memory. I've used software to recover pictures I've accidentally deleted off my phone or camera SD card before, and they work.

Why didn't the place you bought the phones at move the data for you? Mine did from my old flip phone to Druid phone.

If not to the cloud for back up, mine came with a USB/USB MINI cable used to charge the phone. You can use this cable to hook the phone to PC/laptop and the PC/Laptop should see the phone as a storage device like a thumb drive or back up hard drive. You should be able to then pull the pictures off the old phone and then do the same to new phone to put the pictures on it. As for contacts I am not sure what file type that would be to grab & move.

As for the old/new PC/Laptop data move a thumb drive would be the easier way to do data move.
If both devices are on a network you can "share" the hard disk drive (HDD) of the old device and then access the HDD of the old on the new device.
They also sell cables where you pull the HDD from the old device plug it into the HDD and USB on the other to the new device and it should show up as a device like the thumb drive and move the data over.

If all that fails go next door to the teenager and have them do it for you :biggrin_25525:

All of your pics should be on your micro SD card, once you have properly dismounted that(your carrier rep should be able to handle that) then do a factory reset to clear your contacts and apps(your rep can do that too) I've been with Verizon for 12 plus years, they have always been more than happy to help.

Try the app called AirDroid on your android. It's awesome for moving stuff between a PC and your Android. Once you start AirDroid on your phone you then connect to it from your PC or any PC using a web browser.

I'm a computer geek and when I first tried airdroid it was like a miracle.

i use an app called sms backup and restore. it backs all my texts and i save them to sdcard. along with phone numbers.

you need to install software that comes with drivers for your phone on your new laptop. so you laptop can recognize your phone.
once you plug phone into laptop. pull down the dropdown notification bar on your phone. and highligh connect as media device, or usb device, or whatever your phone says. wait a few seconds and a box will pop up on your laptop. click open to view files. you'll see card and phone. click on whichever one you save your pics too. and look for the folder called DCIM. that'll have your pics and vid. copy and paste to laptop.
look for the smsbackup file and copy and save to laptop. plug new phone and copy and paste everything back in.

install the smsbackup and restore on your new phone. open app and direct it to where you saved your sms file. that'll restore your texts and phone numbers.

as for old laptop. system restore is probably already whacked out and won't function. and it won't delete everything that's yours. the bvest method would be what was mentioned above. a complete wipe and restore. all the software is in your hard drive. GOOGLE for your laptop model number and find instructions on how to access that software.

your phone has a restore, as mentioned above. that will wipe everything.

as also mentioned above, nothing is perfect, and anyone that is really smart. will find your information on both phone and laptop.

taking hard drive out of laptop will render device worthless. no one wants to buy a dead laptop. you can install a new hard drive but i'm guessing you don't have the software to reload laptop. BUT, you can order the recovery cd's from the manufacture. they generally run $15 - $25. BUT, that's money out of your pocket you wno't recover, along with the purchase of a new hard drive. to which you can find cheapest buy looking at pricewatch.com. it's where i buy computer parts occasionally, as there are no stores around here anymore to buy parts from.

good luck with your windows 8 machine. i wiped mine out and installed 7. windows 10 will be out in 4 months.
