New trucks aren't always what they are cracked up to be; been in shop with several new truck owners and they are in there as much as me; the only difference is they don't pay the bill but they eat the down the time. down time is a killer too. that max force engine and new cummins engine is all crap and I've heard nothing good bout running engines with def and all that electrical crap. glider kits and older engines, heard a lot of good things bout glider kits and detroits engines, would look into that!

I have been doing some research on these new engines and their inner workings. I've even called Cummins and spoke to a tech. In my opinion the new engines while not all created equal, none are as bad as people make them sound. Different technology calls for different techniques! (just like operating a car with a 4 barrel carburetor -vs- fuel injected) Or you WILL be in the shop.
Case in point, if you buy a new truck with one of those "unreliable" engines. YOU NEED TO GET AN APU OR GENERATOR. They are not meant to be idled. If you do, you will pay dearly.
So, don't over look a new truck, with a new technology engine. But, do talk to the manufacturer directly and learn the dos and don'ts.
Called on some 2011 trucks that were coming into a Pete dealer last fall all with an ISX. Mileage was to be around 500,000, all had APU's & were team driven company trucks. ALL motors had been opened up in the 300,000 mile range for cylinder/ring warranty work. These were the last of the DPF only motors produced just before SCR hit the market. That sort of stuff should deter most from opening their check book purchasing the EPA agenda.
