Just finished my training and about to start out on my own. I'll be going about 400 - 900 miles state side out of Mississauga
....northeast and mid west. I'm confident but nervous as hell as well.
I'm looking for advice....I'll take all I can get.
Thanks in advance!

1. Are you driving as an employee or a contractor?
2. Who are you driving for?
Welcome to the forum.Horse Organ Thanks this. -
I'm a company driver. I'm working for Kriska, they're supposed to be a good company, from what I hear anyways.
I'm just looking for advice on things to watch out for.tinytim Thanks this. -
That's a good one to work with. Never fall for the being hired as a contractor and driving their truck, it is very common in Toronto.
Just gotta use common sense really... as far as day to day goes. You will get the hang of it. Things to watch out for as far as what? Company politics? Equipment issues? Dealing with customers or dispatch? Most of it best way to learn is by doing it. And asking questions along the way. This forum is a great resource for that. There aren't any dumb questions. Well that's not totally true. But they will be answered after something like well that's a dumb question but here's what I would do / have done in same situation...tinytim, Horse Organ and BigHossVolvo Thank this. -

1. You only can go too fast around a corner or down a hill once.
2. It's a lot cooler backing into a spot or a dock without hitting something, than doing it in one shot.
3. Detroit border guards are God. Answers should be as follows but not limited to: No, Yes, X number of days, I live here, I picked up 'here', I delivered 'here', 'this' is what I'm carrying.
4. Canada border guards are rude as #### some days, for no reason. These guys can screw your day up but remember you're a Canadian and those idiots have to respect your rights. To a point.
5. Your a criminal, in MTO's eyes and DOT. So document everything and cover heindquaters at all times.
6. Buy a tire beater, something solid avoid metal tips. Keep it beside your seat. You can't carry weapons (gun ect) but something like a tire beater can be used as a DETERRENT ONLY. I don't promote nor advise violence unless completely necessary, and I was threatened by a Frenchman in a yard in Quebec city yesterday. (He had a 4 foot metal pipe, and I chased him back to his truck.) So it can happen.
6b. Don't lay down in front of people or your going to get walked on, but don't stand up to them unless your willing to go for gold. Sometimes you need to take it to a place that can get hairy. In other words. Don't let your mouth write a cheque you ### can't cash.
7. Listen twice, talk once. You can tell who the idiots are, and who the trucking encyclopedias are.
8. Welcome dude.tinytim, BigHossVolvo and Horse Organ Thank this. -
