Newbie in Augusta, GA – Looking for school/carrier advice

    Hey y'all,

    I am looking to get into the industry and am getting ready to pull the trigger on a local trucking school here in Augusta, GA. Alternatively, I am open to a company-sponsored training program if the contract makes sense.

    Before I sign any paperwork, I want to be realistic about what my career options will look like after graduation. I have a very specific set of criteria, and I want the unvarnished truth from the veterans here who don't have a recruiter's angle.

    Here is what I am looking for:
    1. Geography: I want to stay strictly in the Deep South lanes.
    2. Terrain: I want to avoid major mountain ranges (Rockies/Appalachians). Flat running is the goal.
    3. Home Time: I need a regional or dedicated account that guarantees I am home weekly for a full 32 to 48-hour reset.

    I know OTR is the default answer for new grads, but I’m looking for regional, intermodal, or dedicated hub-and-spoke setups that fit this profile right out of the gate.

    If you were in my shoes living in Augusta, which specific companies or terminals in the CSRA (Central Savannah River Area) would you steer me toward? Who actually honors their home time and keeps drivers flat-land trucking in the South?

    Appreciate any honest advice or warnings y'all can throw my way. Thanks!

    Even if no jobs are showing in Augusta at the moment, that doesn't matter until you graduate from CDL school and have all required endorsements.

    Note that pulling boxes (i.e., reefer &/or dry van) is boring work -- & NO ONE is happy to see you, when you arrive at your destinations.

    Tanker &/or flatbed will offer you a much more interesting & rewarding trucking experience.

    I started out with Schneider.

    Schneider is unique....in that they will hire & train you for tanker duty, right out of CDL school:

    For this job -- you will need both tanker & hazmat endorsements -- but Schneider will help you get them.

    Get that CDL at a local, nearby tech school or community college, first.
