It was about 0 degrees here with a -20 wind chill, and I agree with you. Started my 2015 ISX 9900 with 300k miles, engine light on and deregulated because of def. Wasn't doing to many miles so I drove it as is. Could only get to about 60 because once I shifted to 10th I'd lose speed...even when I got empty.
Then when I was done for the day left it running, and started 3 other trucks to make sure they'd be ready to go. Two of the trucks were 2013 ISX Prostars about 400k miles and were hard starting with engine lights on. The third was a 2007 ISX 9900ix with 1.1 million, no problems...
Newer trucks can't handle extreme cold?

I was idle in Pilot by the state line CT/MA (I-84) a couple day ago. Not sure how cold but my 2017 Cascadia last for 4 maybe 5 hrs before shutting itself down due to DPF. I was able to get it back up and do the regen but it took me awhile.Have to engine over write first then do the park regen. My 2008 Cascadia had no problem....I missed my old ride.

HBO Ice Road truckers must be using DPF Deletes.
Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
My Volvo did weird #### when I'd let it idle.
Set cruise. It would say "Smart Idle Engaged".
Never a problem.
I think so many problems are created by the overwhelming flood of misinformation available.ReeferOhio, tony97905 and Tb0n3 Thank this. -
Was and had been minus 10 not counting wind chill before I left home after 5 days off .
A lot of this boils down to paying attention to the weather forecast.
I knew it would be nasty cold well before I got home and fuel was set up for it and blended throughout the system .
24hours before I left I fired up the fuel fired engine heater and no problems .
Put down the u tube videos and look at the weather and plan .tony97905 and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -

Let's see, when I pulled into Ontario, CA this afternoon it was like 85 degrees. I hope my truck starts alright in the morning

I was operating in -30c (-24f) for two days last week. My 2016 Cascadia with a DD16 doesn’t consume any DEF fluid at all when it is that cold.
I did have the winter front installed at these temps, if it gets above -25c I take it off.jamespmack Thanks this. -
Lol. We have lots of guys running northern routes at -40 to -50c using Paccar MX13s and Cummins isx15s. Both handle the cold very well. Almost better running without a winter front then with one. Get rid of the 2 speed fan and go back to the old on/off. No DEF usage at those temps. Worst enemy is the dpf differential pressure sensor sucking in moisture when truck is shut off.
