I'm driving for an owner op and his truck doesn't have an e log installed. Since we're only driving within 100 miles he says we only need a time sheet. The problem is we go between states. NY and PA just for reference. Is this legal or do we need a log for interstate?

As long as you're not going 100 air miles or 115 road miles from your terminal that is correct. See link: Regulations Section

You have three criteria to meet.
    1. 100 air mile eadius.
    2. 12 hours max a day.
    3. Start and stop at same location.

There is no requirement to stay intrastate. If you meet all three you can use a timecard instead of a graph log. This has not changed.
You only need an eld if you do full graph log more than 8 days in 30.

It's not 115 road miles. It's a 100 air mile radius which translates into 115 statutory mile radius. One can drive 600 miles a day under the exemption, as long as that radius from the start/stop place is never breached.

"air miles" is nautical miles, which are longer than statute miles by the 15% mentioned.

yep it's legal as long as you don't go over 12 hours and your suppose to punch a time clock in and out at terminal each day but I haven't seen it enforced

Doesn't have to be a terminal. Just start and stop at the same place every day.

And you see how easy that is? I Still use "Trip sheets" to keep track of my IFTA,and Start/stop , So,No More Logs for me Either, Used to be 100 air miles,BUT If you crossed lines,You had to run a log,When did they change that?

I Hope you guys make MILLIONS running your ELD after dec 17th....(or whenever it is)
Hope you Drivers have bulging wallets full of cash!!

It was never an issue, just needed to educate the troopers some...shouldn't be an issue now.

My very first local gig was a big construction company. 600 employees. They had double bellies that went in to Wyoming to bring in sand for their concrete plant in utah. Timecards was all they ever used. But that was 17 years ago.
