Unless it's a X15 you've got the better motor by far, minus the cups...
That D13 will go almost twice as far to in frame as a ISX
Both Volvo and Cummins use the Holset vgt turbo.
Put a Cummins N14+ in there and now we're talking
-
My truck has 679k miles on it right now. This engine acting like it is on its last leg even though it gets an oil change done every 25k miles and I run shell Rottella T6 in it.
-
I miss the pulling power and the engine brake of my ISX powered volvo. It also got better fuel economy.
-
Yeah. How much oil are you adding between the 25k intervals ?
When that D13 is actually running right, your fuel mpg will be better than a ISX....... X15 is another story.
Also when running right, that D13 will pull unless it's a low Tq ecm flash in it. -
None. It doesnt use any. Also idle oil pressure is 30 psi and 60 psi hauling the mail down the road. Had oil analysis done not long ago. No wear metals, fuel or glycerides in the oil.
-
That's what i mean... 679k if it were on a ISX with zero oil consumption is pretty much unheard of.
Your D13 bottom end is in very good shape, that's great news.
They will last 1.5M+ quite often. Allot has to do with the far Superior oil filtration system compared to the Cummins too. Factory bypass filter was very smart of Volvo.
...the injector cups are the biggest irritation on a D13 though they are such a complete piece of crap piece of engineering.
Sadly the first generation injector cups were actually a better design but they needed to be made out of stainless steel instead of brass that would have fixed the problem.
the new conical injector is a complete piece of crap because it doesn't use a sealing copper washer underneath the shoulder of the injector where it goes through the cup. They are built to leak and they do that quite well

Tell me about it. This last set introduced a flutter to the engine under a hard pull right out of the box. I complained from day one about it. I even demanded to have them pulled and checked. Volvo refused saying there was no hard start therefore they werent gonna pull them. Fast forward until my warranty is gone and all of a sudden that flutter was a known issue from the injector manufacturer and a whole 6 pack is required to resolve it. Talk about me being angry. Im still angry.
KB3MMX Thanks this. -
Yeah I'm sure you're angry. it would have been nice when it all started to have gotten the confirmation on air bubbles in the return lines.
I almost guarantee they screwed up at least one injector Cup right from the start, the flutter is from at least one cylinder not contributing power like the others. -
Yes 1 injector tip was round like an egg. The rest were fine.
KB3MMX Thanks this.
