I bought a truck in Florida. My LLC in North Carolina owns the truck and the truck was licensed in NC. I need to drive the truck from Fl to NC going thru GA and SC. I am confused whether I need a DOT number because the truck is 14,500lbs but I am not for hire and will not transport anything. I was told to write "Not for hire" but online there is mixed information about it. In NC, I will only do intrastate deliveries so I will not need DOT. Would appreciate if anyone can give me an insight.

It's a commercial vehicle over 10k, a DOT number is required. Have it towed, get a temp tag or run it outlaw at night.
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
Thanks. As far as I could find out I can get a DOT number and a trip permit for each state. I think it might be the safest and correct way to do it without the need for authority.

I'm guessing this is a single screw day cab ? Or a U-haul type van

If it’s diesel get temp permits for each state if you want to cya.
Run at night. Florida scales are open 24/7 but GA, SC and NC will be closed. Don’t forget to stop at the AG inspection. At night they’ll just wave you through if you can get them to stop playing games long enough to notice that you’re there.Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
Thanks but I already got a NC tag.

All you need on your truck is the license plate. You can put not for hire on it.
Have your bill of sale and insurance with you, registration, that's all you need.
Don't carry any frieght.
Don't have any other decals on your truck.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Concorde Thanks this.

This isn't rocket science, just put the tag on it, have your sales records with you, and make sure it is insured, then go and get it, no one will bother you. If you are, then you have the proof you are just transporting it home.
Rideandrepair, drh72, wis bang and 1 other person Thank this.
