I am going to be bobtailing to Kentucky from California for orientation at Mercer Transportation. I will be installing an Omnitrac system there. I have a Garmin GPS and don't want to spend $250 on the Garmin ELD unit to plug in the truck. I was going to use the KeepTruckin app on my phone seeing as it still works without being plugged in to the truck. It is highly likely I will be answering some questions at some weigh stations.
You think I can charm my way there? Should I spend the $250 for the stupid ELD unit even though I will only be using it for 4 or 5 days? It will probably be less than the fine for not having an ELD.
Any experience or help is much appreciated.

How long have you been running this last month? In the last 30 days have you paper logged more then 8 days?
Might be able to use that exemption.
Otherwise the only legal way I know of is to run an ELD. Might be one that you can do a monthly fee for, although I think everyone I seen that has no hardware cost for a monthly fee requires a 12 month prepay.brian991219 and RumbleTruckin Thank this. -
Paper log and remarks ELD is not functional.

Do nothing.
State that you are on personal conveyance (PC) for vacation to Cali - there is no rule that you cannot use whatever "vehicle" is at your disposal.
PC would would not require you to document every stop/activity.
And dont incriminate yourself about heading to 'orientation'Justrucking2 Thanks this. -

Commercial vehicle status is irrelevant.
I've seen people taking their kids for vacation in a Semi (stop overthinking it)feldsforever and Justrucking2 Thank this. -

Just do paper and as said note that the ELD is not working.
