Keep an eye on posts here about hiring freezes and more and more experienced drivers out of work competing for jobs . The only driving jobs out there are ones that drivers that know better won't accept .
Driving schools aren't going to shut down just because the job market has dried up .

I would wait until say Jan. before signing up with a school. Like Rick said, allot of layoffs, hiring freezes and mega carrier school closures. My gut tells me that very soon there will not be anyone hiring newbies out here. And the experienced drivers that do get hired will need 2-3 yrs otr to even be considered, with a very clean record.

I would call around to the companies that you are considering and see if they will be hiring in a month or two or implementing hiring freezes. Hopefully they can at least give you an informed answer. Not looking good out here.

Sounds like a very realistic possibility to me.
