Hello, I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving! My question is in regards to fuel hauling. I wanted to seek advice from folks in the business. What would be the best way to go about doing this line of work? My goal is not to run a fleet or anything like that. I just want to be one man one truck/trailer and deliver fuel to airport fuel farms.

    Thank you!

Most airports seems to have companies locked in already. West coast has very few o/o’s hauling fuel. Seems to be more of a Midwest to maybe east coast thing.

It’s best to make sure the job is a good fit for you before buying a truck. In other words, test it out as a company driver first then progress to an owner operator if you like the job.

Fuel hauling is a payload maximizing segment. The ideal truck is a day cab with a light tare weight. - This might not be the ideal truck to use in other trucking segments if you decide fuel hauling isn’t your thing.

Larger carriers tend to be the ones holding the contracts for airport tank farm hauls. Just like other segments of trucking, large carriers may not be that desirable to work for. - In which case hauling for a smaller fuel dealer might be a better option.

I briefly looked into Keenan Advantage Group. They hire owner ops. Might want to check them out.

+1....The "KAG" ...would be an above average place to start out in fuel, & get some experience with it first -- as a company driver.

Then later go solo there...after you've learned the biz.

Note that...depending on where you are -- fuel can be a ver-ry cutthroat/low margin business -- because of so much competition.

Thus -- look for areas where there are fewer carriers...than in others.

Still -- an experienced fuel hauler with a good safety record can always find CDL work.

For a company job look into Pilot / Flying J or Loves (Gemini). I’d rather deliver to truck stops than tight little gas station parking lots. Seems far less stressful.

OP have you been around the hazmat stuff before? After hauling a few loads I’ve decided I’m not a fan of nasty refineries and it can’t be healthy breathing in those fumes every day. Slight bump in pay in exchange for cancer later in life? No thanks. I would be interested in food grade tankers though. KAG has a division for it and Indian River is another popular option I see around.
