So, how far would you go, and I don't mean travel distance, to acquire old Iron? I have an opportunity to get a truck that is pre DPF. Let's assume the truck is in pretty decent shape. I could give it a 6, maybe even a 7 in the condition department. Problem is, it's an 18 speed and I've never driven an 18. What would you be willing to look past in order to relieve yourself of the headaches/dollars associated with emission aftertreatment crap?

Quite a lot. But don’t just rush in.

Do your due diligence - Rig Dig, samples, Dyno etc.

18 is just a 13 that you can split the low range. Drive it like a 13.

  4. Will this pre-cowpiss truck fit your application of use. Do you goto commie-fornia? How are you at wrench twisting?

If you don't mind wrenching , and you do the basic pre purchase deal, and a good price , then doing a 18 speed will be simple , they shift like normal, you just split more gears, i think they are great. And there all- right for tamker hauling.

    Oldironfan and spindrift Thank this.

If you are a Cummins mechanic, here's what to do

Buy an ELD exempt truck and yank out that computerized junk.

Sell off the computerized engine and put in a brand new Cummins big cam.

Easy to work on and dependable. Being a Cummins mechanic you will have absolutely zero problems and you'll be able to read these threads and feel bad for guys with their computer nonsense.

Pull a few fuses out of the panel, I've seen pickups where it was all corroded junk. A feedmill around here had a truck burn up while the owner was mixing feed, I was told that thing was all corroded and the fuse panel wiring shot from people resting their #### covered boots on it.
