The problem is nearly every day some new guy is on here with dreams to go buy a truck and be his own boss and make big money. They here the tremendous thousands of dollars truckers make and are like wow that's a lot of money!!!
Last I heard I think it was about 80 percent of new owner operators fail within the first year.
It's not impossible obviously to make it work, it just takes a lot more determination and dedication than most people realize.
Another quote that holds true with it is this one. Easily in not easily out as the lobster said in the lobster pot.
If you go belly up as a new O/O it's going to take a long time to get out of debt with just a day job. Sometimes when it gets tough i tell my wife it has to work because this truck is the only way I can pay for this thing. If I fail, it's gonna go down in a big way with thousands of dollars of debt.
Not something to blindly jump into.FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
Do a lease purchase.
That way you'll learn how to Be a owner operator
Without having to have any money.
be your on boss.
Nobody tells you what to do anymore.
Pick your own freight.
Modify the truck anyway you want.
Fuel wherever you want.
Go home whenever you want,
And for however long you want.
You get to sit at the counter at the iron skillet
With the real owner operators and ##### about
Cheap freight all day long.
Call all the company drivers stupid, even though they
Make twice as much as you do.
Us company drivers aren't allowed at the counter.
Can't beat a lease purchase deals.
I'm thinking about doing one myself.FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
Dont forget you can get on the CB to scream at anyone not going 10 over the speed limit in the middle lane. Outta my way, i gotta haul 3 loads thru atlanta to break even today.

Thanks for all the answers. After doing my own research and seeing what the pros say here I'm not even going to think of being an OO for at least 5 years. In that time I'll drive running hard and saving money and learn the business and ins and outs of the trucking business and see is it even profitable all the way around to be an OO or stay a company driver.
Just passing by, magoo68 and Cattleman84 Thank this. -
I've been driving truck along time. All my family drives trucks. Several have been owner operators. It's not doom and gloom. With any business, its all about making good decisions. Unless you have a crystal ball, all you can do is be prepared. I can tell you this, if that individual who saved 100k before becoming an o/o had his struggles, why didn't he stay doing what he was doing to get the 100k?
I just think there are too many people who have agendas when they are replying on these boards instead of just giving factual data from there own testimony. It doesn't hurt to say IDK.FlaSwampRat and OldeSkool Thank this. -
Try to get into a situation where you self dispatch in a company truck. That is the best practice you can possibly get without taking on the actual risk of OO. If you cant make more doing that as you did company forced dispatched, stay put.
