I am currently in the process of getting back on the road after almost 3 months at home. I shut down my numbers and canceled the insurance.
I have all the paperwork and insurance lined up now and just waiting on the operating status to change back to authorized.

My new trailer is ready to pick up in Ohio and I am in NYC. Am I allowed to bobtail to Ohio, grab my trailer and return to NYC unloaded while my Operating Status is Not Authorized?

I'm running to PA after my new one, What I was told was If it is your trailer and you are not running for profit That I would be fine any type of paying load and it would be commercial.

Decided I'd wait and go straight to work when I pick it up.

Btw, here is the new trailer
    53' + 3' extensions
    10k Dexter oil bath
    2 speed landing gear
    Heavy mesh
    14 ply 16" wheels
    Reverse lights
8' Aluminum ramps with rear and side mounts.

Sweet, what does the trailer weigh by itself and how much can it scale?

I'll have an exact weight when I pick it up and scale with it. Should be 7,500-8,500 lbs and its rated for 24,000 lbs.

Is the truck/trailer in your name or company name? It's a tough question but even if you did do it I'd 100% put not for hire signs on if the authority is not active yet. Oh and for the record usually the state DOT number is active from day one but it's the DOT number that takes time.

For example when I 1st started I legally ran a lot in FL before my DOT number went active during that 20 day grace period. The issue is if you go through a scale or a DOT pulls you over when they look up the DOT it will so as inactive so you will have explaining to do but it's legal in your home state.

I mean logically thinking if the tags are legal, the insurance is legal you should be able to drive it for not for hire related activity. On flip side, I'm sure the DOT could argue that going to pick up your trailer is related to for-hire work. If truck/trailer is in your name not the business then I can't see an issue but who knows.

Anyway, you've been missing the hell out of the insane car market coming out of FL. I've been doing my normal regional runs out of CFL to SC, NC or AL, MS & LA, and been getting $500- $800 a car for 1.5 day runs. It's really hard to get back into FL with anything good but man coming out of FL has been gold with cars for the last 2 months. Ran a Fedex van from NC to LA for $1.40/mile before I put anything else on.

If the car market is this good then IMO is shows the brokers have been screwing the freight market.

btw did they say what they will charge for those trailers when they build more or is it a quote type deal?

I'm already authorized and everything is in order. Just picked up my trailer an hour ago! Starting work the moment I find an open shop to give me a dot inspection.
My trailer came out a little over $20,000. Thats including installing a 12k winch I purchased separately.
Next weekend I'll post some pics and info.

The freight is there and it’s paying, it’s the TL’s I see brokers mostly trying to run for cheap. I’ve been putting 2-3 partials together for $1.80-$2.25/mile, just think outside the box and don’t accept the cheap ####.

Why should I put 2 or 3 partials together to try to get $2/mile and deal with signing up with freight brokers sending them insurance certs and hoping they didn't lie or miscommunicate the dimensions/weight when instead I can easily get the same money running 2 cars and I can simply look up the known dimensions/weight of any car? Often times I can get both cars at the same auction.. Also a car loading & unload time is roughly 30 mins on average. I don't need to wait for this guy or that guy to get around to getting it. I load /unload myself and hit the road.

Sorry, but the freight isn't there not trying to come out of FL and then trying to get out of wherever you go. It's been dead as hell for under 26k guys. I can much easier haul 2 cars and get them almost anywhere to just about anyplace I want to go. Freight is just now coming back after 4 months of brokers screwing us over. I say let them squirm..

My last freight load was before states started shutting down, but I do have a mini excavator booked this week but that's a load I got myself other than that it's cars, car, car for me at least for now. Freight brokers absolutely screwed over owner ops meanwhile car prices kept going up in the same time frame. That tells me everything I needed to know about who was keeping the freight prices down. Freight is dead to me at least for now. Not to mention most of my carloads are COD.

Freight has just "now" started to come back but I see no reason to switch back from cars right now..
