Opinions On: Securing Steel Coils - Use of chains / straps / dunage

Its been about a month or so since this topic has been brought up. There will be tons of misinformation and bickering to be had.

Probably be a good place to start. Very bottom of Chapter 1 of the handbook, in particular.

 

If the chains came from a place that sells transport equipment, they are likely good for 6000 lbs in a single strand. Some of the 3/8" chain in the hardware stores is only good for about 2500 lbs single.

 

To be honest, I have never hauled steel coils, have hauled a lot of aluminum coils though. The little knowledge I have about chains comes from hauling logs, lol. I am eagerly watching this thread in hopes of learning something.

 

I've hauled plenty of steel coils, hauling coils with the eye to the side is called "loaded for suicide". If the coil gets away it will roll right over the cab and crush the driver like a bug. When hauling heavy coils, I always put 5 securements on them. Criss-cross chains through the eye, one chain on each side through the eye, and one over the top. It's always better to over secure than to under secure one. A coil on the ground can mean disaster for anyone who gets in the way of it, and manslaughter charges for the driver.

 

doing suicide coils i do 7 chains thru the middle and 2 straps over the top (40k lbs)
