Rather or not it's faster is very debatable because the speed limit on 97 is 60 miles an hour now. It's just that you're less likely to hit slow traffic during the summer months on I-5 but I do agree it's still a really nice drive

Weight really is not a consideration on those roads. Your going to slow.

  4. I used to love running that way until GPS ruined it about 5 years ago bringing more idiots than ever before.. good old chemult great truckstop Down by K falls Mollies was a great place to get drunk and have fun..or sometimes stopping to that little Exxon at the state line at Worden have a beer there and go to bed..
then on down through weed back on to five or vice versa.. 97 was always I preferred it over 5.

Seems to me any time you think you’d gain running the semi-flat little roads would be lost by traffic lights.

For what you’re describing here, just as well to stay on the big road, I would think.

Highway 97 through Oregon has Maybe 10 lights at the most throughout the entire stretch and that's a high estimate. The highway has a bunch of little town so there's no need for stop lights. The main thing that might make up a little bit of the time difference is the speed limit through the towns.

I got curious the difference in mileage from Weed California to Biggs Junction Oregon. It is an extra 110 miles to go up I-5 to 84 then to just stay on Highway 97.

The 97 from Madras to Biggs is poorly maintained during winter.

    Freezing fog. Black ice.

    Ask me how I know.
