USPS' long-awaited new mail truck makes its debut to rave reviews from carriers
The Grumman "Long Life Vehicle" dates to 1986 or 1987, so it's been in service for almost four decades.
Apparently the Oshkosh factory is in South Carolina.

The Wikipedia article has some technical information about the old Grummans; apparently they were largely a GM chassis with an aluminum body by Grumman.

Looks like something NASA would have used to take the mercury astronauts to the launch pad.
Kyle G. Thanks this. -
Dang, and I thought it was made in Wisconsin. Another site mentioned this, and how refreshing, an entity that lost $6.8 BILLION last year, is ordering 50,000 of these at a cost of $60,000 each, or $2.98 Billion dollars. I don't know, sounds like investing in a dinosaur if you ask me.

Couldn’t imagine having the sun beat that giant windshield all day…

Will it help USPS improve services?
No.
Here in the sticks we don't get our mail daily, sometimes it is a three-day gap.
I asked my mail carrier, and she said they gave her two other routes, one short one and one longer one than ours, and she has to fit it all in. She said some days are 10 hours a day. -
I've heard that if you can deal with the "office politics" and all the backstabbing and the lousy hateful incompetent supervisors, if you can deal with all that nonsense, then the fringe benefits and the pensions for USPS employees are off-the-charts.
The other thing that really worries me about a career as a USPS mail deliverer would be if I were at a full-stop to open a mailbox on the right side of a rural road, and being sort of physically "naked" in the road, so to speak, but there's a Karen flying down the road, behind me, in an 8000-lb SUV, at 45MPH to 55MPH or more, and she's thumb-TXTing the guy with whom she's cheating on her husband, and she forgets to look up, and she slams into me at 50MPH or more, and that's the end of me.
The article about the new Oshkosh platforms does seem to indicate that they put some thought into the new bumpers.
Hopefully that will save a lot of lives. -
Had a good friend that was a postal carrier for over 20 years... He had to provide his own vehicle for his rural mail delivery route.
The_vett Thanks this. -
Our carriers supply their own vehicles here for the most part. They get extra pay for a vehicle that is plenty enough to pay for one and some. Few of em lease I vehicle for it, and in a couple years after hitting stuff all down the side and stop/starting hundreds of times a day, they are rolling scrap heaps.
The_vett Thanks this.
