Are there any other companies out there that are similar to W&S in the way that they let you drive without a trainer after a 10 day or so process?

I never found one with as good a 10 day. There was 1 and now I cannot find the name. I am with Watkins Shepard and am enjoying it, I just reached 90 days it has been a great experience.

I've read your posts and Chris's. I'm waiting to finish school and get my CDL. I have looked into W&S and I'm definetly looking forward to going with them. Should I call them now and start the ball rolling or wait until I finish (OCT 16)? Do they do alot of Eastern runs? I was looking to do something in the range of 5-6 days out 1-2 days home.

I would go ahead and call them and get the ball rollin'. They told me to call them back as soon as I started school as I applied for their school which they don't do anymore.

I would call them now to get in the system and get everything handled. They have eastern runs out of Conover. They like to see drivers out at least 3 weeks at a time plus if you are not out you are not making money.

Yo shiftin..... I run out of conover and you can definately be out 5-6 days and home 2. In fact, you can leave out on Sunday nights and be home on Thursday or Friday afternoons and make a ton of money. The way to do this is to tell them that you wanna do East coast furniture runs. The way to make the money doing this is to take the runs with over 20 stops. You get 20 bucks per stop, plus your mileage pay, so do the math. The money and the big stop loads are there if you are willing to run. And before anyone starts saying I am exagerating about the money and the fact he can be home every weekend.... my brother ran with watkins and for six months was home every weekend and clearing a real nice check every week. Good luck to ya shiftin....

Thanks Big and Scott. I guess from what I have heard is that Regional is the 6 out and 1-2 in and OTR is about 3-4 weeks out at a time. I have read about the furniture runs which sounds great as far as the money, but was also looking for some drop and hook runs to make my time out a little easier and to mix it up a little. As with the furniture runs, how does the unloading process go?

Shiftin, your better off with the furniture if you wanna make the cash and be home every weekend. I run up and down cali doing mostly drop and hook and we make less doing it and only push so many miles a week. The checks are still nice but with a furniture load your not doing a run and back every day like we are.

Also be prepaired, you may still have to be out a few weeks before they let ya run one of those runs.

    Yo Shiftin,

I am guessing you will be running out of NJ??? The good furniture runs are out of the Conover terminal, and most all guys that do those runs like all the time run out of that terminal. It would def be possible for you to do it out of NJ though, sinse a lot of those furniture loads final out in that area. They work like this..... Each furniture stop out of conover pays 20 bucks. So say you have 22 stops, you just made 440 dollars off your stops. On top of that you get paid for the miles you run, of course, so you can see how the money can stack up. As far as unloading, at most places you will have people coming in your truck and basically taking it out on dollies. Now of course you have some that wont hardly help at all. Per company standards, all you have to do is bring the freight to the back of the trailer and they have to do the rest...... Your drop and hooks come at the end of your furniture deliveries. You will get a load to get you back to conover to leave out with another furniture load, and this is where you can just go bump a dock and roll out to conover. Good luck to ya in whatever you decide. Furniture is good money and you can be home most weekends, but it is A BUNCH OF TIGHT SPOTS!

Thanks BigMoney. I don't have a problem with the furniture runs. The only thing is when you do get to a place that has no one there to unload what happens? I would like to do runs from NC to the Northeast. NJ and NY dont bother me. I used to run limos into NYC and all around the Tri-State, so I'm used to the traffic and sitting.
