Hello, I am planning to purchase a used truck for the first time.
I currently reside in NY. I initially established my LLC in MO, but my business address is in NY, where I currently live.
I am planning to purchase a used truck in MO and will register it in NY. Given my situation, would I still qualify for the Rolling Stock sales tax exemption?

I was told that there is no sales tax when purchasing a truck in MO. Are there any documents I need to obtain from the dealer and submit to NY for registration?

My accountant is not very familiar with trucking-related tax matters, so I was wondering if you could recommend a tax professional or accountant who specializes in this area.

This is a bit sticky - I'm in MO with an LLC in the state.

If you provide a DOT number in MO there is a sales tax exemption on purchase, but would be a moot point if you're going to purchase the truck from MO and register it in NY.

You'd have to deal with whatever BS NY has to throw at you for registration.

Ask a tax LAWYER who works with interstate business, there is a lot of them. They can sort it all out.

I'm getting a DOT number through my company in Missouri, but my driver's license is registered in New York. I'm not sure where I should register the truck's address.

    OK, why?
Weird, why would you do that?
Why would you register it in NY?
Most likely. the state of NY has a page devoted to this with the forms needed to fill out.
yes got to their site and read how it is done
That is not connected, don't matter where you are licensed.
Not sure either, but then you haven't given much in details to explain what you are doing because it sounds all convluted to me.

New York is actually quite easy to register cmv. First time I believe you have to do it in Albany, then any others you can register through the OSCAR website. There are people who can do the registration in Albany for you if you can't get there in person. You need to have your ducks in a row or they will send you away. If you call the dmv Albany and ask them, they will tell you exactly what you need.

You can do whatever you want, but you should have your LLC and your business and everything where you live.

Do not attempt to tell the insurance company that your business is in Missouri and you reside in New York.

I hope you're not doing this in an attempt to defraud the insurance companies.

I promise you if that is what you are doing, if anything, anything anything happens in your business they will not pay the claim.

If God forbid you have an accident and there are millions of dollars worth of damage, they can literally void what you signed and you are 1,000% on your own.

I hope that's not what you're trying to do, and to anyone else that's reading this, it's the stupidest thing you could ever do to try to defraud the insurance company.

I don't know that that's why you did that I'm not accusing you of that, I'm just telling you if that's what you're doing they 1,000% will not pay one penny on any problem that you have, and they can retroactively revoke your insurance because they will say you lied on your application.

On top of that if you have an LLC in another state you're going to end up paying tax multiple times.

Not a good idea on any front to do that.

The State the Title is being transferred to your name, is the one that does, or doesn’t charge sales tax.
