Different strokes for different folks.
No lumpers
No appointments, 99.9% of the time
Very few long waits loading or unloading.
No lumpers.
No lumpers.
No lumpers.
No unloading your self.
I typically got better rates than what I got with a dry van.
Generally speaking a whole different attitude with the people you have to deal with, from the shipper to the reciever right down to the guys that actually load and unload.
No warehouses, well rarely.
I myself learned real quick I didn't have the right attitude to deal with box freight and the people that deals in it generally, open deck of any kind, the worst load is better than the best in a box, in my opinion.
Generally speaking it is more work, it is also more challenging at times, you sometimes have to get pretty creative. You will also have to work in the rain and snow, and getting in to some sites to unload can be challenging too.
Like I said, different strokes for different folks.

Well if you are looking to get into oversize, flatbed is definately a step above a box of any kind. I pulled a lot of oversize on flats, but it is not where the big buck oversize is. A stepdeck would be the next step and I upped by bottom line when I bought mine, but it just keeps going up from there with more specialized trailers if you are after the big bucks, and can get enough loads to make them work for you.
