I personally would have rather hit the ditch than the trailer. Id jack knife the thing rather than hit head on if all else fails.
He probably panicked and stood on the brakes and as he discovered he broke traction on basically every tire. To late, panicked and didn't think of steering away. I didn't notice even an attempt at steering, but it is possible he turned the wheel too quick and that broke traction.
But then i also would not have been following at even twice his distance.
Part of I-80 is expected to be closed most of the day on Friday due to crashes and weather.

Ideally you would slow it down as much as possible, and if you think you aint gonna get it stopped veer off gently. So as to not lose steering.

He just called and said still icy going through there. He said south of Rawlins he saw a few trucks off the road and fender benders. Everyone was going slow. He is in Cheyenne now and it is 60 degrees there!
