    Hey everyone!

I have about 1 month left on my 1 year contract with Central. I managed to save up enough money to take a some months off if I wish and live a somewhat normal life.

Over the last couple years I reduced my monthly expenses down to very minimal and don't need to make as much as I use to (very liberating).

If I quit smoking I can cut down expenses even farther and maybe live longer too!

Not sure if living longer is better tho, have to ask a dead person. I digress.

Anyway, I've thought that OTR isn't all that bad except for spending time with the friends and family. I don't take anything for granted anymore.

I've considered starting a business again (arg) or getting a local driving job.

The problem with both of those is that they typically have the "ball-and-chain" effect.

Been working on internet business but it is slow going. That would be optimal eventually.

Is it possible to drive say, a month, then take a month or couple months off or drive a couple months and take 4 months off?

If so, what companies could one work for where that would be possible?

I dont want to get my own authority and truck. To much regulations and stuff.

    Thanks!

You would have to quit and then get re-hired……highly unlikely. A truck company wants your body and soul with a 100% time commitment. A few companies have a week on/week off deal.

Just thinking out loud, I don't think there are many occupations that would allow this. Maybe construction industry? Car salesperson?
Imagine a forklift driver applying for a job and saying I can work January, March, April, May, June, and November. I don't think it will fly.

Oh, I don't think so. Depending on where the weather is in the Winter where one is at, you can get the Winter months off in the construction industry (unless your company plows snow, as well), but construction season (which is every season which is not Winter), that dog ain't gonna hunt. If someone thinks OTR is bad, let them get into the construction industry, especially when projects start going into penalty phase.

To the OP: MAYBE you can find a gig type job. I found one on Craigslist back in 2011... make a run from Co. Springs to Kremmling and back, September through April, once every week or two on my days off, depending on how often they need me. But, more likely, you might be able to come on as a part-timer. For example, I used to drive for an aggregate and landscaping materials company, and we had a couple part-timers... one guy was a full-time firefighter who drove on his days off, and I'm considering doing the same with the same company, just because I miss being behind the wheel. I don't regret hanging it up, but I kinda need my fix every so often. Plus they're always in need of qualified flat & fork drivers, which was one of my functions with them. But it won't be month on/month off like you're looking for... you need to be regularly available.

If you live in an agriculture area you can check with farmers in the area. They would love to have someone come help in certain times like harvesting. Just a thought. I have someone like you that helps me. He works hard during certain times and the rest he just stays at home. Also you could check with construction yards. They may need someone part time. Good luck:biggrin_25519:
