Hi
Is it legal for an owner operator to come in on his day off and take the truck to be washed using personal conveyance? I’m not asking for ways around it or how to do it, I’m asking if it’s actually legal to do it. Thank you. I see a company driver can’t log washing his truck as PC but as an owner operator who isn’t under any obligation from the company he’s leased in to I don’t see why not.
My safety dept wants me to log it in which will obviously screw up my hours
Personal Conveyance law and washing the truck on weekends.

There is no law, there is no regulation, it is open to be interpreted by the state enforcement and if you are leased to a carrier you follow their rules.
roshea, hope not dumb twucker and Davehrose1 Thank this. -
I'd bet most dot officers would consider that to be an on duty affair
gentleroger, Tb0n3, bamanation and 5 others Thank this. -
Law says you are allowed to log off duty if going from your house/yard to a shop for work, kind of a grey area For a wash, probably won’t be a problem…until it is

The guidance says a driver can't use PC when transporting a CMV to a facility to have vehicle maintenance performed.

All it is, is a guidance for a question that was asked because people wanted to have the FMCSA justify their crying about it.hope not dumb twucker Thanks this. -
Regulations say nothing per PC
The regulation states maintenance/repairs are on duty

Honestly, i always view PC like this. Am i useing it like i would a car. I.E going to the laundromat. Going shopping, going to a doctor ect ect ect? And if the answer is yes, is it less then 2 hours or so? If the answer is yes to both its PC if the answer is no to either then its on duty.
Washing your truck is defo maintaince or is going to be looked at as such by most people dot officer or not. Could you do it and get away with it? Absolutely.....right up till you dont.Vampire, Vitkouski and hope not dumb twucker Thank this. -
If it's work related it's not personal. Pretty simple.
Vampire Thanks this.
