I may've found my next truck.
2021 VNL64T860
D13 455/1850 (NOT turbo compounding)
2:79 Rears
Globetrotter package
just under 500k miles
New drives and steers
EGR cooler has been replaced, all other warranty stuff is small.
Run by small fleet in the South, no rust, VERY clean, fleet has great reputation with local dealers
No APU, has been idled nights (10k hrs. run time on 500k miles, which is about 20% idle time)
** This is roughly the same idle time as my 2015 which DOES have an APU
May buy aftermarket warranty, Volvo warranty is up, 750k Ishift warranty left
Thoughts? If you are anti-Volvo what are you reading this for? Not looking for negativity, looking for Volvo guy's thoughts. I know it's about ready for the mid life stuff, possibly One Box, turbo, etc.

When was the last overhead done? Were the injectors ever replaced? Were the pre- and post-sensors ever replaced? Has the CAC ever been pressure tested? Has the clutch actuator ever been replaced? Has the VGT actuator ever been replaced? Those are the common Volvo things I can think of.
The EGR cooler being replaced is a biggie. There’s an inspection cover on it. Be sure and make inspections a regular part of your services, as a cooler that leaks will wreck the DPF cartridge. In fact, I’d almost want for them to split the can in front of me, to visually inspect the cartridge.LoneRanger, Siinman, KB3MMX and 1 other person Thank this. -
Not sure about overhead yet since some maintenance was done by the fleet but I plan to talk to them. I can only see warranty maintenance done by dealer. Pre/Post sensors yes, CAC has been tested since there was a leak and it was a warranty fix within the last year.
Not sure about clutch actuator or VGT actuator.
Not sure about injectors. Didn't D13's go to common rail and fix injector problems by 21?
I'm definitely familiar with EGR cooler inspection and the damage it can do. -
Volvos really need good shocks on them, to get the most out of their ride. I’d be doing that from the beginning.
It sounds like you’ve got a good handle on this truck and are researching it right. I think, your mention of the extended warranty would be a great thing to consider. If it continues to check out, then, move forward.Tadakatsu, 86scotty and Big Road Skateboard Thank this. -
Thanks @ducnut. Yep, shocks are cheap and easy. I've done them a few times on my 780. I just talked to my mechanic (again) and he confirmed that the injectors aren't nearly as bad a problem on the newer d13's as the later models. They can still be trouble but not nearly as common. It is high on my list of worries since this one has no APU and has been idled. So is a $5k One Box.
I'm hoping to drop by the dealer that did the warranty work as soon as I can get there and this truck would definitely be going straight to my mechanic for a full run through, including overhead of course.
Anybody else running 2.79 rears? I've got 2.64 and have enjoyed my 7.5mpg average over last few years. I don't think it will be much different but before yesterday I had never even heard of that gearset.ducnut Thanks this. -
Our T680’s have 2.79 rears. I run 1215rpm, at 67mph, on 295’s.Siinman, Tadakatsu, KB3MMX and 1 other person Thank this. -
I don't think you can go wrong for a $10,300 Volvo OEM warranty package to give you that kind of securityducnut Thanks this. -
This isn't at a Volvo dealer unfortunately. I'm told the only extended warranty I can buy from the selling dealer or my Volvo dealer later is NTP warranty.
ducnut Thanks this. -
Get a dump on the ECM and also check all the service records. Might be a good truck if they took care of it. I love my truck. -
