I haven't been here in years and since they removed the Iron Skillet. So today I stopped with the wife and we almost cried. Gone of course is the Iron Skillet and dining room that had a wonderful fireplace and replaced with a fast food court. Just what we as drivers do not need, more fast food.

There is also a huge traveler tourist trap area now with all the trinkets you can imagine. It is bad enough that there are 3 fast food selections and the Iron Skillet Express is not a substitute for a real sit down restaurant but the vast store area now is for the 4 wheelers with all kinds of things for sale.

This used to be a go to place for me, fuel, plenty of parking and a sit down restaurant to welcome you after a long day on the road. I just can't bring myself to eat in fast food restaurants and try to fit it in with all the 4 wheelers buying their goodies. Sorry Petro but Dodge City is off my list.

    You sure it’s a Petro?
I thought it was a Pilot.

As bad as Iron Skillet is, it's really no lose. Would be nice to have a real sit-down sure. But just an Iron Skillet, well I'll take Subway any day over that place.

And no, I'm not saying Subway is in anyway shape or form good.

The BBQ place across the street from that Petro is good. Gets you away from the riff raff at these truckstops too. Win win

It never was any good as a Petro! When it was the dodge city truck stop we had something then! Good food, friendly attentive waitress, and good food! But you newer guys may not remember that!

That particular Iron Skillet--well, when it was still there--actually was one of the better ones, as it was one of the only places where one could find steak, shrimp AND crawfish on the line. (Well, for those of us who like that kind of stuff.) Of course they had more than that, but I remember that being my go-to stopping spot on my trips between Tennessee and Florida.

I like the OP caught a rude awakening when I stopped down there toward the tail of end of 2017 only to find the Iron Skillet closed and that entire area under construction. Talk about a dejection.

The issue with these travel plazas in our society today. Is that everyone is in a hurry, so these travel plazas did polls as to what today's drivers wanted, and so now we must suffer as many of the sit down restaurants are being phased out, for fast , greasy, nasty ### fast food. Sad state of affairs that they have been catering to the travelling public, not just truckers these days. That is why they are travel plazas now, not called or labelled truck stops.

True that...sit-ins and sit-downs are becoming harder and harder to find.

Which is one reason I'm glad I run more of the upper midwest and Pacific northwest these days...I've found that more the establishments up this way cater more to to truckers than to the general public. (Plus I'm learning more from guys who really know what they're doing up here, running 120K+ on the regular, through winter, mountains and all other kinds of stuff going on without even blinking.)

Thankfully Stone's up here in Watertown SD will never sell out...the owner told me that personally.

That Petro has the biggest lot in the South. And there ain't nothing wrong with country fried steak from a Petro, it's made fresh by hand every time.
Edit. I mean the Iron skillet fried steak.
