a air pressure sensor is mounted inside the tire (battery powered) with a low power radio transmitter...

The truckstop has a receiver at the pump it pick up the reading..

A cars system works the same way...

There’s a scale In the NE that has this on the hwy
I had just put new trailer tires on and the shop a) had a loose stem and b) forgot to turn the auto air system I have back on

Scale pulled me in and said left rear outside tire is low
They let me tighten and air up the tire with no issue but this does already exist

the weight stations system uses a inferred camera system to see heat differences between the tires (low tires run hotter) the same system checks heat differences in brakes to see ones out of adjustment

We have the cat eyes on the drives that show if set of tires is low. We have auto inflation system on the trailers. Wonderful system. I walk around and check all of them them every time I stop. I also check reefer temp and generally check the trucks over all condition as well as getting in a few extra steps. My dispatcher has plenty to do as it is without having to worry about tire inflation. That’s my job.

It's mounted on the back of the valve stem in most cars. If you change a wheel or stem it has to be synched with the car. There is also the type that is integrated with the ABS sensor on cars and judges wheel speed since all 4 should be turning at the same speed. It's not as accurate.

    Got stopped on a scale.
Weighmaster told me to set my breaks,he need to check something.Walked around and thumped my passenger side drives, walked back around and told me to go. Don’t know how long they’re going to do that.

Third party supplier selling TPMS systems.
Sensors can be installed on each tire and can be read remotely.
    Not cheap, though.

One or more tires reading too hot by his camera.
Underinflation tends to do that to a tire.
He found no issues, he let you go.

    O.Henry Thanks this.
