When I was regional, I brought the tractor home. I live about 5 minutes from the Indiana Toll rd, and the trailer got parked at exit 72. There's a large parking area next to the toll booth.

a $3000 bill just for materials is a lot for a parking pad. If I do it in gravel the money I save I will be able to extend it long enough to also make a few RV pads for my retired friends. The concrete is much nicer but the cost here would be close to $10k and possibly as high as $15k. It is not cheap anymore. Now hauling gravel? I just happen to know a few idle trucks I can barter drive time for free use on. Now I can save another $200 a load on the gravel.

If I were King for a year and had the wealth to do it right I would go for a good solid concrete pad and metal building to back the tractor and RV in for storage. Until then I will settle for a good job to build up some savings so the wife and I can afford to travel.

You have all the parking in the world right there and don't even have to back up to get out.

No flippin way would I park my truck/trailer anywhere but in the driveway if I lived where you do.

I’d like some concrete and black top - but the price just keeps going up.

The rain has been an issue lately round here. I got the front end sunk to the rims the other week barely 10 feet off the gravel.

Well that tends to happen when you don't have compacted ground lol.

If I were building a driveway or parking area for a truck out of base material and gravel, I'd dig 4" down and compact the dirt then put in 4" of compacted road base, then 2 or 3" of 3/4-1" rock on top. The larger rock holds up much better than the smaller crap and the compacted road base makes it so heavy trucks don't ever sink.

Using just road base as a driveway is where everyone messes up. Whenever it gets wet it gets soft again and just gets torn up. That's why it's called base material. Designed to go under something else.

in 35 yrs driving, never drove for a company that was not near or had a drop lot within 30 miles.

where I live, zoning prohibits street parking in city limits.

Back to the original post I also have a TA 9 miles away, Flying J 22 miles and all of Joplin's lots 35 miles away. My hope is to be close to the company yard. Too many cities I have lived in restricted Semi Parking. To get around it becomes more an issue of where the company will let you park. I cannot believe how many will just leave a truck loaded or empty in a truck stop because there are cameras or a rent a cop. If the Company is good with it, it is their rig not mine.

If you want to work out a deal with the company you sign up with, they already have designated lots they call secure. My driveway is not one mostly because the loop at the end is a real challenge to get a 53 footer spun around without hitting the pole. Off gravel, it is slick and sloppy no matter what time of year it is. After I widen the drive on the big curve I will be able to back the trailer up the grass for a turn then parallel on a pad near the edge of the property.
