    Hello everyone,
I hope someone can help me out with this question. Back in 2008 when I first got my CDL, I was OTR training with Swift for 2 weeks. While I was out on the road, I got really bored at trucking, home sick, and did not take trucking seriously as I am now. So I picked a fight with my trainer so that I could be terminated at that moment and leave. I didn't care at the moment because I thought I would never (yup, never says never) go into trucking again. Fast foward, 6 years later, I feel determined and really looking forward to driving a truck again. I also feel much more mature now than I was then, and more responsibility now that I have a 4yo and a 9 mo. old baby. I just received a DAC report and this is what Swift had under my employment history report.

Eligible for Rehire: Review required before hiring
Reason for Leaving: Discharged or Company Terminated Lease

My question is: Can I still re-apply at Swift (since it says review required before hiring, so I would think that there's still hope) or at other OTR companies? Or which company do you guys recommend I should look into since I am in the Bay Area. The companies with the nearest terminals including Gordon, Werner, Swift, and CR England (i think, not sure). Also, any recommendation on what I should say to my next employer for my reason to be discharged at Swift?

Thank you all for reading and looking forward to reading your responses.

I'd just tell future companies the truth with minimal details - "I had issues with my trainer and left the company."

More than likely, you'll have to complete a 40-hour refresher (assuming you still have a valid CDL) before you can go anywhere.

I realize you said you've matured, but maturity won't keep homesickness away.

Well, you had no problem leaving when you first started, when you didn't have small children at to house. It would even be easier to quit again, using them as the excuse to get off the road. Life on the road can be very hard, especially the first year or so. Being away from the family can take a toll. From what I read, this "might" not be the career path you need to go down. Not trying to be hard on you, just being knonest.
Search the companies you listed in your post, most of them are bottom feeders, then think about working for them, pros and cons. Either way, good luck to you.

Just a quick question for the OP. When you discovered that you didn't want to do trucking, why did you decide that the best course of action was to get yourself fired instead of simply resigning?

Also, and I speak from experience here, having two young kids at home is not going to help with the homesickness. You should really think this through before you commit the time and resources to get back into trucking. And if you've gotten yourself purposely fired from any other jobs in the interim, trucking or not, that could also affect you're hirability. Trucking is no place for people who make irrational decisions with no regard for the consequences because people could die. There are plenty of other jobs out there where that is not the case.

Thank you for everyone quick responses..

Jonrule, I think you made a good point, using my children to get off the road again. But I don't think I have a choice and time is running out (I"m getting too old). Plus, this time I'm actually looking forward to being on the road again. I have revisited those moments on the road in my head over and over again. And I think this time I could do it. (If I could get back on the road again, I promise I will keep this thread open to let everyone see my progression).

8thnote: I thought that resigning I would have to wait till we get back to the local terminal when we were somewhere in Ohio, and I couldnt wait to get off the truck. So I decided that getting fired I could fly back home immediately (which I did).

Does anyone know any company that offers a refresher course as DE365 had mention it? Thank you.

Good advice, don't say anything about you picked a fight with the trainer.
If Swift will take you, and they probably will, then go through their academy or refresher, which ever they require. Either way, Swift has a good deal going, after completing their training you have a choice of staying with Swift or leaving. They bill you for the training if you leave.

If you decide to leave for another company, here's 4 to look at:

Northern Refrigerated Transportation - Turlock - they run CA,OR,WA,AZ,NV,ID

Watkins-Shepard - terminals in Modesto and Santa Fe Springs - ask about their tuition reimbursement program.

System Transport - terminals in French Camp and Bloomington - also have some Western Regional running if you don't want 48 states.

TWT Refrigerated Service - terminals in Bloomington and French Camp. Can run Western states.

    Check the trans-system website.

Im worried that you are looking back fondly to a 2 week exsperiance 6 years ago to make a huge life change today. Be absoulutly sure, and dont forget to get the opinion of the wife. More than 1 family has had problems with the seperation. You say your getting old at 31, if trucking is a last ditch option due to cost of living you might be better served to move your family to a cheaper city to live in than go otr. Does the wife has a support structure other than you? Getting a call that the babys sick the car is broke and shes mad your not there to help can just about kill a man. If you want to go for the right reason then great and good luck. But it NEEDS to be the right reason. If not your going to be missarable, distracted, and very homesick. If you have a strong woman you can be happy. Like others im not saying dont, im just saying be realistic. Good luck
