If they used the toll money to build an interstate bypass around Elk Mountain that would be great, but it would probably go to the general fund like most taxation schemes.

That's funny...one of the reasons for it was to reduce congestion. Congestion in Wyoming? In all my decades of OTR, I don't recall ever seeing congestion anywhere in Wyoming...except in the Love's fuel island line in Wamsutter that is. Just one more reason to avoid that desolate wasteland of a state.

    Let's do some figuring here:

It costs $60 million per year for the state of Wyoming to maintain its length of interstate 80, but it requires an additional $40 million to maintain the "infrastructure" of said interstate.

Problem is that the definition of infrastructure includes the word "roads".

Hold on to your lug nuts, this sounds like a money grab.

They had the chance to do that when it was first built. But going over the top instead of around through the valley was 19 miles shorter.

They need to keep a fleet of wreckers on standby for the ones that get blown over by the wind.

I just came through wyoming.., 45+ wind speeds across elk mountain area so I called 511. It reported US 30 between Rawlins and Laramie as dry. I soon found out WYDOT’s idea of “dry”. 1st half between Walcott and medicine bow was blowing snow and ice patches.., between medicine bow and bosler was hard crosswinds.

Wyoming really needs to put some weather stations on US-30 for the 511 app. Just because the wind isn't as bad as Elk Mountain it doesn't mean it's safe.

    D.Tibbitt Thanks this.
