Yup we have the same thing in Western Canada. There is a European bug and an Oriental bug feasting on our forests. It is said that they came to our shores in nontreated wood furniture but that has not been proven, it could also have been untreated crating discarded at the ports.

Anyone that thinks this obviously doesn’t remember the fruit fly infestation in the 80s that devastated the California agriculture industry for years. It’s done to protect the farmers and the forests.

Few years ago, I hauled a few loads of “Food Grade Export” pallets. They couldn’t get any one to move them because they had to be tarped.
At the delivery place, I asked what was so special about them. Was told they had to be a specific wood, treated a certain way. That was European law for import. They paid really well. The place I loaded even had a tarp setter.

California agriculture dollars for 2019 was about 50 billion. The number 1 rank of all states. Thats a lot of money, just part of the states economy. When it gets to that kind of level, you do things to protect that. They have been fighting serious invasive pest problems for a long time.

Exactly! California would be stupid not to be very careful with agriculture and forest products entering their state.

That makes sense. I hadn't heard about it until now, though--have they been doing this since then, or is this fairly new?

It’s a feel good initiative they do because Joe Blow and his family will slide in carrying the same invasive species and will never be scrutinized and the infestation will still occur. They scrutinize and mess with us because it looks like they’re doing something.
