Okay, If an International was missing the rear drive shaft, is that something you would notice during a pre-trip inspection?

Probably. If the truck was bobtail it would be easy to spot. Was one of the rear axles a bogie or did somebody just forget to put a drive shaft in?

I ask this for a very good reason. We hired a company to drive an International to us. They claim all of their drivers do a full PTI but that company policy states they are not allowed to get under the vehicle. The result was the driver, driving the unit a decent ways until the unit broke down because it had no rear drive shaft.

    InTooDeep Thanks this.

Yes, very noticeable bobtail (without trailer).

Now that being said, not all tractors have a rear driveshaft, but he still should have seen the gaping hole in the diff where the driveshaft goes.

    Right.

This driver said he did a full PTI per the FMCSA (even though their policy is that the driver never gets under the truck). Then, the unit started having some issues but he just kept driving until it wouldn't drive anymore. Now the company says they are not responsible for the repair bill because he did a full PTI.

I'd get a third party (roadside service) to look at it and write up a report stating a PTI wasn't done correctly, or fully. You might need something like that for any possible court case as it sounds like this might end up being one.

The company who hauled it there took out the rear drive shaft and never put it back in upon arrival. We purchased it from the company it was delivered to and with the pandemic we had an outside company drive it here which obviously did not go well. All of the Internationals we bought from this company are missing the rear drive shaft, we discovered after the incident.

Interesting that it was movable unless the power divider was locked in. With the intermediate shaft missing the power divider usually has to be locked to allow it to move. If you ever throw the shaft you will be dead in the water. Lock in the power divider and truck on to get it fixed instead of sitting. Probly blew the power divider at highway speed and thats why it broke down.
