I'm not sure where to put this exactly so mods can move it somewhere else if needed.

I don't want to be on the road forever and because of where I live at, it basically limits me to the public sector, mostly either the county or state. They never seem to have enough plow drivers in the winter.

I realize I'd be taking a decent pay cut from what I'm doing now but I've heard that the public sector jobs have excellent benefits and high job security, both of which severely lack in this industry. I have both tanker and doubles/triples endorsement on my license. Not sure if those would help or not.

I'm not trying to find something new now, just looking in the future

    Thoughts?

At 17 I went to work for the city I lived in. Small suburb w of Mpls.
Great job because we did everything.
Before cities created separate departments for street, park, sewer, etc. Opportunity to learn many skills and machines. Left to pursue a OTR career. No regerts:)

A friend of ours who was looking for a change about a dozen years ago asked me about a state opening.
I looked at the entry level plow driver job and said it sounded like a decent opportunity. He had 2 daughters and sought the stability.
Started out as maintenance and plow driver which led to cdl A training for the license, then a trainer for new drivers.
After 12 years he is a district supervisor with a state pu truck.
Drives from site to site across the state. Makes about 120 a yr and will get the pension that's mostly gone away in the private sector.
The move makes sense if you're no longer satisfied on the road.
    My 2 cents.

I'm pretty sure state DOT plow drivers have been in high demand in the Northeast, Midwest, and Mountain West for several seasons.

Not sure what state you’re in.Usually the majority of plow drivers are part time they usually work other jobs in the private sector.State benefits aren’t bad but pay is usually lower than private sector jobs.Seems a lot think it pays great not sure where they get that from.

The extra cash that you will earn from overtime during snow season, will help balance out your pay. Pension and benefits packages are usually pretty good as well. Plus, you could always do a side hustle driving for farmers during harvest season.

Not sure what the pay is in Kansas but we had a guy quit to take a state job in Grand Island and he was back in 2.5 months because the pay was about half of what we make.

The public sector doesn't have benefits or security.

There are bigger companies that offer but they nanny the crap out of you..and have high turnover rates.

The public sector absolutely has benefits. I doubt there’s a full time gov’t job out there that doesn’t have benefits.
