My doctor recently prescribed some medication that will definitely show up on a drug test however they’ve given me a letter stating that it does not affect my ability to drive. I’m no longer in a driver position with the company I work for as I moved into an office role, however I am still listed as an active driver for the company.

What steps do I need to take to make sure I don’t jeopardize my CDL? Do I need to go to a DOT medical examiner and let them know that I’m taking this prescription and I’m not in a role that requires me to drive a CMV? This is a new area for me and I’ve been doing a lot of research on this site as well as others but I can’t find a firm answer.

Easiest solution is to downgrade to "intrastate exempt" at the state DOT, and remove yourself from the active driver list.

More difficult is to see if your doc can move you to a less problematic script or to solve the problem through (something like diet and exercise).

Hard way is to try and navigate the rules about a hot whizz quiz and the MRO inquiry into the prescription.

Just list the drug on the forms and the DOT Doc will question you on it (they’re required to) As long as its not a prohibited substance you shouldn’t have any problems.. but..

They’re not required to give you a certificate if they don’t want to be liable, regardless if it’s an approved drug..just the way it is.

I would bring a note from your prescribing doctor that says it won’t affect your driving. This may help with approval if the DOT doctor has any concerns.

Everything relies on whether they want to accept liability..nothing more.

Since they don’t test for drugs for a medical certificate you won’t have any problem there.
Problem will be when you have a random drug but, that’s another issue.

    tscottme Thanks this.

Which of the 5 panels are going to show up on a DOT drug screen? THC, Opiates, PCP, Cocaine and Amphetamines...I am reasonably sure they would effect my driving.

Well if you’re not in a driver position role then you won’t be required to take a urine test as a driver. The best step would be to speak to the company your work for and have them unlist you as a driver. As long as your not in a driver role you won’t be enrolled in that companies random urinalysis program for drivers.

I think we are talking about 2 different things here. They don’t drug test you at the exam for a medical card. You do pee in a cup but they are only checking for sugar.
