Multi-family dwellings are way more economical to build and maintain that individual houses. If you're in the right market, touristy areas, a vacation rental makes WAY more money than long term renting. You can also be successful in short term rents if you're near a medical facility or university. My wife vacation rents our house, and just bought another house to do the same thing. At the end of ten years she will own them both free and clear, and they are nice houses. Even with Covid taking away 1/2 of her bookings this year she still made twice as much money as she would long term renting them.
