My company recently started keeping me in the USA to move around trailers and do deliveries. I stay in Michigan moving around trailers to different shippers and drop them in truck stops for another company driver to pickup and bring to canada. Occasionally I'll do deliveries that are brought from Canada to the truck stop and I'll do deliveries ranging from Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin and Kentucky.
Was wondering if it's legal?
A while ago I heard you can only pick up in USA and deliver to Canada. I don't deliver within the USA I just deliver loads other drivers bring to the US.
Anything I should be concerned about?
Question about Canada-US work.

I'd phone US immigration and give them a detailed version of your duties and see what they have to say. Get your info from the horses mouth.

Looks like you yourself are a Canadian citizen?
If so then it is ABSOLUTELY ILLEGAL.
You are breaking the cabotage rules. (Some call it interstating)
When you brought in your first trailer, unloaded or dropped it. You are allowed one move of an empty trailer to reposition. Then the next trailer you grab, loaded or empty, you must leave the USA with it back to Canada.
When you get caught the truck and trailer in your possession at the time will be impounded.tinytim, Northerntanker, BigHossVolvo and 5 others Thank this. -

I just looked up the rules on this and the US rules seem unclear.. If the Company has a terminal in the US... I don’t believe that this applies to the driver... I might’ve wrong, tho... the Canadian rules spell it out: no US driver can transfer passengers or freight within Canada. But, the US rules apply to the domiciled company... it seems... dunno; tho

it sounds like classic cabotage to me.
If you get caught at it or an inspection uncovers it you're likely to have big problems of the sort where you need to find a Canada only carrier.tinytim, Canadianhauler21 and laaylor Thank this. -
Illegal. Very illegal. Penalty is a huge fine + barred from country. Either for life or several years....for your first offence.
Once a loaded trailer is dropped in USA whether it be a company yard or truck stop or anywhere, the move must be completed by an American. If you load a trailer as a Canadian you are taking it back to Canada. Load it in usa then take to usa yard = cabotage. You can only reposition 1 empty trailer. Example. Bring loaded trailer drop it at Cincinnati Ohio. Pickup empty take it to Dayton. Drop empty pickup loaded take to Canada.BigHossVolvo, magoo68, Canadianhauler21 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Thanks! I just wasn’t sure if the same rules apply here in the US that are applied to us US drivers in Canada! I guess it is completely reciprocated! Thanks for the info and clarification!

Ive been working in the states at our terminal every night for 18 years. It’s not legal. You can move a trailer with your freight in it, you can break a trailer with Canadian freight, you must stop once your freight is out. The other activities fall under cabotage. Your opening yourself up to possible issues. Moving trailers to the staging area for other Canadian drivers is legal. Delivering American freight to customers is not legal.
BigHossVolvo, Canadianhauler21 and laaylor Thank this.
